I saw Aladdin in the theater 8 times. Genie was the reason I wanted to be an animator. What an incredible experience to be able to animate this shot with the great Eric Goldberg. Olaf and Genie together, I almost can’t believe it. Another set of backgrounds for Far From the Tree. I painted them traditionally using pencil and copic markers, and then assembled them in Photoshop (see previous post!). . Since the paintings are used as the actual backgrounds for the final shots I also draw/paint the characters in place (original character designs by the brilliant @jamwoods_) to guide downstream departments, including lighting, for which these also served as the lighting keys. . The backgrounds are a bit larger than they will appear in the final shots (note the red and blue lines in the bottom two paintings) to allow for flexibility later on (for example if we decide to adjust the framing of the shot, or need to perform a simple camera move). In Disney’s Far From the Tree, the characters are CG animated, but the backgrounds are painted in a more traditional manner. Here’s a simple behind-the-scenes look at a typical shot. . 1) I begin the background painting by using traditional marker and pencil on photo paper based on a simple modeled layout and camera setup defined by the incredibly versatile @joabaldwin (see step 2). Once I’m happy with the marker sketch I scan and assemble the pieces in photoshop until arriving at the final background painting. I also draw/paint the characters in place to visually explain to downstream departments how they should appear in the shot. . 2) @joabaldwin then updates the rough 3D model to match the final painting, which then becomes the foundation for the placement of the characters for animation, and also because we need it to make the film work in stereo (3D)! . 3) The CG animation team (led by the brilliant @chadsellz) creates the tear jerking and/or hilarious character performance. The characters are then rendered flat and receive a visual treatment (lines, shadows, eye specs) to make them “appear” 2d animated (this was a technique I originally developed for a short circuit project - Exchange Student, also directed by @tallychyck, more on that in a future post). Finally, the Lighting team (led by the innovative @rogerlee.art) integrates the characters with the background and adds the finishing artistic touches (reflections, water movement, caustics, dynamic shadows), to make the shot sing! This was actually one of the dozen or so shots I also lit for the film. . Far From the Tree was a labor of love for all who worked on it and I couldn’t be more proud of the team and the final result. This was the first completed shot of Far From the Tree, from which we learned so much about how to animate and then integrate the cg characters (meant to look hand drawn) with a 2d traditionally painted environment. This shot also includes a subtle camera move which also posed a challenge. . Once this shot was finished I was confident in the technique and that we could make it work for the rest of the project. . 1) My first background painting (of 92 paintings in total!) for Far From the Tree, done traditionally using copic markers and pencil and then scanned and assembled in photoshop. I also draw/paint the characters in place to guide the downstream departments. . 2) The completed shot from the film! Our small and mighty story team @sharktooth72 @cisforfrenchfry @seth.boyden.art @dlee08 were so FUN to work with. I love the collaborative process and story geniuses @disneyanimation , they bring the laughs, and the heart to every drawing and panel they do Pictured above are some early sketches...we drew a lot of noses Do you have a favorite? We were really trying to emulate a board driven story room, where the best ideas rise to the top and the story artists have freedom to play. I love looking back on these, from over a year ago in June 2019.

As I mentioned in my last post, this idea started wayyyy back in 2012/2013 with some simple doodles...and for years I chipped away at it, on and off in many different forms. A short film, a children’s book, a musical(more to come)...because I truly felt this was an idea worth pursuing, I just had no idea how, when or if it would ever happen. Finally, I saw an opportunity for this little short to have a home, when @disneyplus launched and @disneyanimation was starting to look for new ideas. SO, I pulled together 6-7 years worth of doodles, ideas and writing and put a pitch package together! Back in 2012 I started my dream job @disneyanimation as an #animation trainee! My very first film at #disney was #frozen working as a crowd animator and eventually animating my first Disney character #olaf under the supervision and mentorships of @mrhyrum !!! When I started animating on Frozen, #letitgo was being created...it was magical to witness it coming to life. I remember @chadsellz beautifully animating #elsa making #olaf ...creating life for the first time...and then, she just walks away and continues singing. At that exact moment, I knew there was an origin story, beginning during Let it Go and connecting 20 minutes later to where Olaf walks into all of our lives and gets his carrot nose.
I got out my pen and paper and just started writing, doodling and dreaming up a story. These are the original sketches from early 2013...it’s so hard for me to believe that 7 years later, I would have the privilege of bringing this little story to life with @sharktooth72 and all the amazing talents @disneyanimation .

En 2012, j'ai commencé mon travail de rêve aux Walt Disney Animation Studios en tant que stagiaire en animation! Mon tout premier film à Disney était La Reine des Neiges en tant qu'animateur de foule et finalement en animant mon premier personnage de Disney, Olaf, sous la supervision et le mentorat de Hyrum Osmond !!! Quand j'ai commencé à animer sur Frozen, Let It Go était en cours de création ... C'était magique de la voir prendre vie. Je me souviens que Chad Sellers animait magnifiquement Elsa créant Olaf... Créant la vie pour la première fois... Puis, elle s'éloignait en continuant de chanter. À ce moment précis, je savais qu'il y avait une "origin story", commençant pendant Let it Go et reliant 20 minutes plus tard à l'endroit où Olaf entre dans toutes nos vies et obtient son nez de carotte.
J'ai sorti mon stylo et mon papier et j'ai juste commencé à écrire, à griffonner et à imaginer une histoire. Ce sont les croquis originaux du début de 2013 ... j'ai tellement de mal à croire que 7 ans plus tard, j'aurais le privilège de donner vie à cette petite histoire avec Dan Abraham et tous les incroyables talents de Disney Animation.
Leçon : Continuez à rêver... Faites-le parce que vous êtes passionné par l'idée, parce que vous croyez en l'idée et peut-être... juste peut-être (parfois même 7 ans plus tard) l'occasion pourrait se présenter de concrétiser ce rêve.
Alors que des rumeurs (pincettes à prendre donc) évoquent la possible sortie d'un premier teaser dans les deux prochaines semaines, nombreux sont les animateurs qui finissent actuellement leurs derniers plans pour le film :

Raya et le Dernier Dragon aura eu une production bien particulière car les différents membres des équipes travaillent toujours à distance depuis chez eux depuis des mois, ne retournant aux studios qu'en de rares occasions (des projections tests notamment). La "fin" de la partie animation ne signifie pas que le film est terminé, beaucoup d'autres étapes restent à finir (en plus de possibles ajouts/retouches d'animations).

D'ailleurs la VF semble avoir essayé de "gommer" un peu cette théorie. Dans la VO, Olaf affirme un "Did you know that..." ("Saviez-vous que...") tandis qu'en VF la traduction a choisi un "Vrai ou Faux". Ce qui a pour effet de laisser un peu cette idée sous forme de théorie, potentiellement fausse, alors qu'elle était affirmée au milieu d'autres faits réels par Olaf en VO (qui en plus ajoute que cette idée est décriée par beaucoup mais est vraie). La théorie de l'eau (ayant une mémoire) n'étant ensuite réellement présente que lors d'événements trop magiques pour être réels, ce qui crée naturellement une distance avec la véracité de cette idée.

I worked closely with character, animation, effects, tech Anim. Look and lighting. It took a team to make this happen. I love these folks for making my little girl dreams come true. I remember when I was 3 or so and my grandfather put me in front of the saddle and galloped across the field, what is now the Burbank equestrian center. I remember being disappointed because our rental horse had a short tail. I was hoping for a long flowing fairytale tail. But the moment that horse flew across the field I was hooked. Saving baby sitting money bits at a time I was able to rent the horses on my own. After I started working at Disney I bought my first car and then a horse. The very first costume designs that I was asked to work on for #frozen2 over 2 years ago. These designs were for a scene that ultimately didn’t make it into the film, but that featured the girls traveling in inclement weather. While Elsa didn’t keep her hood, a lot of the elements of this design ended up being adopted into her travel coat. We were so early in the process that we didn’t have a plan for color yet, so I was asked to work in greyscale. We don’t always work this way, but sometimes it is good to switch things up! After a few years away, it was so wonderful to work with these characters again. They just feel like home #frozen2#elsa#anna#disneyfrozen#disney

As we started to explore Elsa’s travel costume, we had just a few elements that we knew we needed to include. She needed to be wearing layers, her hemline had to be off the ground, and she needed to be wearing some kind of pant to support the amount of activity she would be put through. Also, if her costume could include an element that would move well in the wind (since we did know that Gale would be interacting with her), that would be a bonus. I thought it was important to include Gale in the design process to give everything a little more context. Normally on Frozen we try to hone in on a favorite design or two before we show our directors, but this was such new territory for us that we did show all of these designs (and probably more) to get their feedback. Ultimately, they asked for a combination of two of these designs and that is where we landed - can you tell which two? I love working with Elsa, and this assignment was certainly a challenge. Pour ce qui est de Mushu, ce n'est très certainement qu'une énième légende d'Internet. Si Jeffrey Katzenberg possède bien les droits, comment expliquer en effet que Mushu est toujours présent dans les parcs Disney, et a pu apparaître dans pleins de produits dérivés, jeux comme Kingdom Hearts ou même simplement dans Mulan 2 sorti bien après? Je pense que cette rumeur trouve l'une de ses sources dans le fait que Eddie Murphy (la voix originale) n'avait pas pu reprendre son role de Mushu pour Mulan 2 a cause d'une clause dans son contrat pour Shrek 2 (où il fait la voix de l’Âne), et fut remplacé par Mark Moseley. De plus, les frères Bancroft seraient sans doute au courant si tel était le cas.
L'absence dans ce remake a en revanche beaucoup de sens. Déjà, le personnage de Mushu n'est pas pas très apprécié par les chinois, le personnage, très comique, étant un dragon, l'un des symboles importants de Chine. Pour ne rien améliorer, le nom du personnage est inspiré du moo shu pork, un plat avec du cochon de la culture asiatique d'Amérique. Niveau classe, il y a mieux. Cette nouvelle version de Mulan cherchant à séduire le marché asiatique, il est cohérent de faire en sorte que le film leur plaise (ce qui se voit rien qu'avec le style du film dans le premier teaser) et donc gommer certains éléments un peu plus sensibles.
A l’occasion du Siggraph 2018, un salon professionnel où les studios présentent leurs recherches et leurs progrès dans le domaine de l'infographie et la programmation graphique, Pixar a présenté Purl, son prochain court-métrage expérimental, d'une durée de 8 minutes, réalisé par Kristen Lester.
Une image a été diffusée présentant le personnage principal, qui n'est autre qu'une grosse pelote de laine.
