In Disney’s Far From the Tree, the characters are CG animated, but the backgrounds are painted in a more traditional manner. Here’s a simple behind-the-scenes look at a typical shot. . 1) I begin the background painting by using traditional marker and pencil on photo paper based on a simple modeled layout and camera setup defined by the incredibly versatile @joabaldwin (see step 2). Once I’m happy with the marker sketch I scan and assemble the pieces in photoshop until arriving at the final background painting. I also draw/paint the characters in place to visually explain to downstream departments how they should appear in the shot. . 2) @joabaldwin then updates the rough 3D model to match the final painting, which then becomes the foundation for the placement of the characters for animation, and also because we need it to make the film work in stereo (3D)! . 3) The CG animation team (led by the brilliant @chadsellz) creates the tear jerking and/or hilarious character performance. The characters are then rendered flat and receive a visual treatment (lines, shadows, eye specs) to make them “appear” 2d animated (this was a technique I originally developed for a short circuit project - Exchange Student, also directed by @tallychyck, more on that in a future post). Finally, the Lighting team (led by the innovative @rogerlee.art) integrates the characters with the background and adds the finishing artistic touches (reflections, water movement, caustics, dynamic shadows), to make the shot sing! This was actually one of the dozen or so shots I also lit for the film. . Far From the Tree was a labor of love for all who worked on it and I couldn’t be more proud of the team and the final result. Enjoy the film in theaters with Encanto! . #farfromthetree#disney#disneyanimation#animation#encanto#conceptdesign#conceptart#productiondesign#waltdisneyanimationstudios
This was the first completed shot of Far From the Tree, from which we learned so much about how to animate and then integrate the cg characters (meant to look hand drawn) with a 2d traditionally painted environment. This shot also includes a subtle camera move which also posed a challenge. . Once this shot was finished I was confident in the technique and that we could make it work for the rest of the project. . 1) My first background painting (of 92 paintings in total!) for Far From the Tree, done traditionally using copic markers and pencil and then scanned and assembled in photoshop. I also draw/paint the characters in place to guide the downstream departments. . 2) The completed shot from the film! Go see Far From the Tree in theaters with Encanto! . #farfromthetree#disney#disneyanimation#waltdisneyanimation#waltdisneyanimationstudios#encanto#painting#animator#painting#conceptdesign#animationart

Here’s another background painting from Far From the Tree which I painted traditionally and then assembled in photoshop … but what does that mean exactly? Here’s what: . 1) Final background painting (to provide context for the following slides). I also paint the characters in place to guide downstream departments. . 2) Layout render (roughly modeled by the versatile @joabaldwin), which I use for reference in order to make sure the camera and characters will be in sync. This is actually the starting point. . 3) Scanned pencil and copic marker drawing/painting of the tree element done on real paper to match the rough model … I had to paint many elements like this in separate pieces in order for the 3d and camera moves to work! . 4- Cutting out and assembling the scanned pieces in photoshop! . 9) The final shot from the film, first animated in cg by @bhomman, then with the 2d character look technique and dappled lighting applied by the incredible lighting team! . Go see Far From the Tree on the big screen with Encanto while you still can!
I was honestly really thankful to have been given the chance to make the colour script for the short. I’ve never made one before (and am usually too scared to paint when there are way more qualified artists to do it) but @tallychyck gave me a chance and @dethancooper_art guided me through the process. I still have a long way to go, but I was proud of it . - #farfromthetree#disney#disneyanimation #visualdevelopment
Early color script for Far From the Tree, the beautiful short showing before Encanto in theaters now. Painted over the existing storyboards… Thanks to @tallychyck for directing such a charming short and allowing me to contribute For students, the idea behind this was to capture both the mood and the light of the Pacific Northwest area…. Starting off neutral sunlight/ complimentary shadows, then darker and cooler to feel more foreboding… and finally beautiful twilight towards the end…

#Encanto/ @EncantoMovie is a joyful, jubilant ode to family with the perfect blend of heart & humor. Enchanting, hugely entertaining, awe-inducing & dazzling. A must-see magical marvel. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s songs will make you tap your feet & make tears fall.

Encanto is a visual and musical feast for the eyes & ears. A joyous animated celebration of Colombian culture & family. Lin-Manuel’s music continues to impress and is very likely be recognized for Best Original Song. Loved all the characters especially Mirabel and Bruno. #Encanto Lastly, kudos to Byron Howard Jared Bush & Charise Castro Smith for telling a story that not embraces and celebrates culture, but does so in a way that is relatable to everyone including children of all ages. This film conveys the kind of Disney magic that I want to see more of.
Michael Lee a écrit:
#Encanto enchants w/ its beautiful Colombian cultural specificities, colorful visuals, and emotionally resonating themes of family. 60 films in, Disney still finds ways to captivate its audience with their animated musicals. This one is a real tearjerker but also such a joy! Because representation is important, it’s worth nothing that #Encanto is largely, not entirely, comprised of a Colombian and Afro-Latino cast. So it was great to see that representation reflected in the visuals and voice casting. LMM comprised eight songs that are a love letter to Reggaton, Salsa, and Colombia itself. So much fun but also deeply emotional. If the Moana soundtrack has been on constant rotation, get ready for #Encanto to bust through your speakers. Soo good.

#Encanto is super cute! Stephanie Beatriz, Diane Guerrero and Jessica Darrow shine. I loved the music, the songs are so fun and lively. It’s got a beautiful message about self worth, and it was refreshing to see some Afro-Latinx characters not just in the background, but as part of the main cast.

I just screened 25+ minutes of @DisneyRaya. What an amazing and MAGICAL film! Gorgeous animation,a heartfelt story with new #Disney characters you will love. Raya, Sisu & TukTuk are gonna win you over. In a time with so much division, #DisneyRaya stresses the importance of unity. pic.twitter.com/TgjYqvfrRo
Saw early footage of #DisneyRaya, and I can't wait to see it in its entirety. It's rich in SEA representation. That comes through in its architecture, costumes, food, landscape, mythology, & weaponry. Raya, Sisu & TukTuk bring fun to a film that has unexpected Indiana Jones vibes pic.twitter.com/bx4Lt6LqNg
Screened 25+ minutes of Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon. WOW! Stunning. Captivating. Intriguing. Raya is full of sass, heart, & kicks serious butt - I adore her already. Sisu is hilarious & Tuk Tuk is my new favorite animal sidekick. Can't wait for more @DisneyRaya! #DisneyRayapic.twitter.com/FzYr23C6cu
Just screened nearly 30 minutes of @DisneyAnimation’s new feature #RayaAndTheLastDragon. Beautiful landscapes, epic music and equal devotion to action, comedy and character drama. It’s in theaters and on Disney+ March 5th. Looking forward to watching entire film soon. #DisneyRayapic.twitter.com/lsARQf3Upq
Got to see footage from Raya and the Last Dragon today... Can we put Kelly Marie Tran in everything, ever please? Raya’s great and has a bit of an Indiana Jones streak to her, which I loved.
Our small and mighty story team @sharktooth72 @cisforfrenchfry @seth.boyden.art @dlee08 were so FUN to work with. I love the collaborative process and story geniuses @disneyanimation , they bring the laughs, and the heart to every drawing and panel they do Pictured above are some early sketches...we drew a lot of noses Do you have a favorite? I love looking back on these, from over a year ago in June 2019.

Part 2 #onceuponasnowman behind the scenes! As I mentioned in my last post, this idea started wayyyy back in 2012/2013 with some simple doodles...and for years I chipped away at it, on and off in many different forms. A short film, a children’s book, a musical(more to come)...because I truly felt this was an idea worth pursuing, I just had no idea how, when or if it would ever happen. Finally, I saw an opportunity for this little short to have a home, when @disneyplus launched and @disneyanimation was starting to look for new ideas. SO, I pulled together 6-7 years worth of doodles, ideas and writing and put a pitch package together! More to come about pitching and how @sharktooth72 and I partnered up to work on this fun little project!!!

Creating #onceuponasnowman has been an unbelievable journey and a true highlight of my career. Every few days I will post some behind the scenes stories, drawings and write about my experience...let’s start from the beginning!
Back in 2012 I started my dream job @disneyanimation as an #animation trainee! My very first film at #disney was #frozen working as a crowd animator and eventually animating my first Disney character #olaf under the supervision and mentorships of @mrhyrum !!! When I started animating on Frozen, #letitgo was being created...it was magical to witness it coming to life. I remember @chadsellz beautifully animating #elsa making #olaf ...creating life for the first time...and then, she just walks away and continues singing. At that exact moment, I knew there was an origin story, beginning during Let it Go and connecting 20 minutes later to where Olaf walks into all of our lives and gets his carrot nose.
I got out my pen and paper and just started writing, doodling and dreaming up a story. These are the original sketches from early 2013...it’s so hard for me to believe that 7 years later, I would have the privilege of bringing this little story to life with @sharktooth72 and all the amazing talents @disneyanimation .
I officially finished my last shot on "Raya" This movie has it all for me, beautiful visuals, exciting adventure , compelling characters...! I'm super proud of being part of it and I cannot wait for the world to see it!

Citation :
Our first days shoot actually started a day early. Our budget and schedule (74 days) did not allow time to shoot a montage of Mulan getting dressed up for the matchmaker, which devastated me. So the ever fabulous Liz Tan @celluloidgypsy 1st AD and all around goddess warrior genius filmmaker contrived to allow Mandy and I to shoot on our last day of prep. I had always been determined to bring vibrant color to this movie (my colleagues will remember the wars I waged against the color brown) and to see our first images come through like this was thrilling. Thank you to Make-Up Designer Denise Kum @denisekum . Gracias to Costume Designer Bina Daigeler @bina_daigeler_costumedesign . And gratitude to you too Mandy Walker! @mandywalkerdp. My girls. Camera Tests...
One of the very important things we do in the last weeks of pre-production are camera tests with the actors. It gives us an opportunity to see the characters for the first time, on film, in hair, makeup and costume. Generally it involves actors walking to and from the camera, but I like to encourage them to be in character and to enjoy the experience. This is a little clip we cut together to show the studio. It was their first glimpse of the new Mulan - as a village girl, a male soldier, and a warrior woman. Also their first look at her squad - our beloved group of boys and their sergeant. I love them all - and I love this piece cut by editor David Coulson #mulan#disney#yifei_cc#loyalbravetrue

While XY Studios were a huge gift to the production design of MULAN, it lacked one crucial thing - a killer establishing shot of the Imperial Palace. We needed stairs - the more dramatic the better - for a couple of essential moments in the movie. We found them Hengdien, in Zhejiang province. We were very inspired by the amazing shot on these stairs at beginning of ‘Hero’, but knew we need an iconic shot of our own. Here’s Mandy @mandywalkerdp masterminding such a shot on one of our many location scouts, and the drone which eventually captured it. My strong advice would be to experience the shot on the largest possible screen. It’s super cool. #mulan#disney#yifei_cc#warrior#loyalbravetrue

nikicaro a écrit:
It’s hard to overestimate how important costume design is on a movie of this scale and scope. Costume Designer Bina Daigeler @bina_daigeler_costumedesign began with Mulan’s most critical costume. This costume needed to disguise Mulan as a man, but then reveal her as a woman. It needed to take her to war, (armour) but also move with her through martial arts based action choreography. Bina approached the design with her trademark intuition and logic, and her abundant artistry and creativity. The shots of Mulan fighting are some of my favorites in the movie. I see a fearless warrior, but I also see a real woman. I love how Bina’s design reveals the strong, female body. I love how it moves with Yifei - how it’s both tough and flexible. I think Bina created something genuinely iconic, and one of my most cherished dreams is one day seeing a whole tribe of little warrior Mulans on Halloween... #mulan#disney#yifei_cc#warrior#loyalbravetrue

The Walt Disney Company France a écrit:
