Citation :
While plenty of work remains before the opening day of Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland, Imagineers are already planting seeds for future expansion of the bi-coastal themed lands.

“We are being open to wherever Star Wars goes over the next decade,” Trowbridge said. “I would never put a limitation on what we might be able to do in the world of Star Wars.”

A smaller Star Wars area is also in the works for the Walt Disney Studios Park in Paris.

A luxury Star Wars hotel is being build in Orlando but an opening date hasn’t been revealed.

Many fans assumed Galaxy’s Edge might bring the end of Star Tours - That ride is not located near the new Star Wars land. But Disney plans to keep Star Tours open despite it not being physically connected to the new land.

Galaxy’s Edge cantina coming to Disneyland draws inspiration from wretched hives of scum and villainy in ‘Star Wars’ movies

'Every self-respecting spaceport has a cantina,' says Walt Disney Imagineering portfolio creative executive Scott Trowbridge.

Oga’s Cantina in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will give Disneyland visitors the opportunity to order an alien cocktail in a wretched hive of scum and villainy just like the one where Han Solo dispatched with a bounty hunter — minus the blaster aimed at you under the table.

The Galaxy’s Edge cantina at the center of Disneyland’s new themed land will draw inspiration from the lively cocktail bars seen in “Solo,” “The Force Awakens” and the original “Star Wars” film.

“If you think about ‘Star Wars’ films, they almost always have a great cantina as part of their experience,” Walt Disney Imagineering executive creative director Chris Beatty said. “We’ve seen the one on Mos Eisley, which had the Modal Nodes playing over in the corner. We’ve seen the one at Maz’s Castle. We got to see one in ‘Solo’ where Han and Chewie first met Lando Calrissian. So, of course, our planet has to have a local watering hole.”

Oga’s Cantina will be the social gathering place at the center of the Black Spire Outpost village on the Star Wars planet of Batuu, the setting for the new 14-acre themed lands at the Anaheim theme park and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida.

“Every self-respecting spaceport has a cantina,” Imagineering portfolio creative executive Scott Trowbridge said. “This is the best place on the outpost to catch up on the gossip, to meet some interesting characters, maybe make a new friend, maybe make a new enemy.”

The Galaxy’s Edge watering hole was designed to be reminiscent of the Mos Eisley cantina in the original 1977 movie while still retaining its own unique character.

“Around the outside are all these little nooks and crannies where you will be able to sit on a little bench seat,” Beatty said during a tour of Oga’s Cantina. “The table in front of you is uplit to make it kind of mysterious.”

In addition to the Mos Eisley cantina on Tatooine, Oga’s was influenced by Maz’s Castle on Takodana, the Fort Ypso Lodge on Vandor and other notorious bars throughout the Star Wars universe.

Let’s take a closer look at how the cantinas in the “Star Wars” films influenced the Galaxy’s Edge cocktail bar and other stories told in Black Spire Outpost.

Mos Eisley Cantina

The dimly lit Mos Eisley cantina on Tatooine that “Star Wars” fans first saw in the original 1977 film was a popular gathering place for smugglers, bounty hunters and aliens. Droids were not welcome. Violent outbreaks were common. Obi-Wan Kenobi sliced off an alien thug’s arm with a lightsaber and Han Solo killed Greedo the bounty hunter in the seedy cantina.

Oga’s will have a layout similar to the Mos Eisley cantina with a U-shaped bar and secluded seating alcoves around the perimeter.

Just like in the Tatooine tavern, Oga’s bartenders will make interstellar cocktails that appear to be pumped from glass tanks behind the bar that are seemingly filled with marinating alien creatures.

The Ronto Roasters sandwich stand in Galaxy’s Edge will serve a non-alcoholic version of the Tatooine Sunset cocktail that was available on the Mos Eisley cantina drink menu. The Tatooine Sunset served at Ronto Roasters will be a blend of lemonade and unsweetened ice tea with blueberry and melon flavors.

Another popular Tatooine drink served in the Mos Eisley bar — Blue Milk — will be sold in non-alcoholic form at Oga’s Cantina and the Milk Stand in the Black Spire village.

The soundtrack in the Mos Eisley cantina was provided by Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes, an alien band with large heads, bulging lidless eyes and long fingers from the Star Wars planet of Bith. Instead of a band, Oga’s Cantina will have DJ R-3X, the former Star Tours droid pilot better known as Rex.

“Each one of those cantinas has a unique sound to it. This one is no different,” Beatty said. “This is sorta like Jawa meets new age meets the 80s. It’s a weird sound but it’s going to be so much fun to share with our guests.”

The DJ set list in Oga’s will include a B-side song from the the Modal Nodes with the same infectious Benny Goodman-esque sound as the “Cantina Band #1” song from the original “Star Wars” movie.

While the Modal Nodes are not expected to make appearances in Galaxy’s Edge, a small marketplace stall in the Black Spire village will be run by a Bith jewelry maker.

Among the many aliens in the Mos Eisley cantina was a hammerhead Ithorian creature with bulging eyes and two mouths in his curved neck. A mysterious Ithorian collector and trader named Dok-Ondar will run a rare antiquities shop in Black Spire Outpost.

“We knew that we wanted to meet an Ithorian in our land,” Imagineering managing story editor Margaret Kerrison said. “We just fell in love with him from the beginning because his story is that he is the gatekeeper of the black market.”

Maz’s Castle

All manner of smugglers, spies and scoundrels hung out and mingled at Maz’s Castle without fear of attack thanks to a strict no violence rule instituted by pirate queen proprietor Maz Kanata. The lakeshore castle on the Star Wars planet of Takodana offered food, drink and games of chance while customers awaited repairs to their spacecraft, solicited loans or sought information.

Most “Star Wars” fans saw Maz’s Castle for the first time in the 2015 film “The Force Awakens,” when the castle was destroyed by the First Order.

A surly, disfigured cook named Strono “Cookie” Tuggs worked in the kitchen of Maz’s Castle before the attack. In Galaxy’s Edge, Cookie has been promoted to chef at Docking Bay 7 Food & Cargo, according to the restaurant’s backstory.

Now Cookie travels the Star Wars galaxy in his mobile kitchen starship and fills his pantry with exotic interstellar ingredients that he uses to create otherworldly dishes. Cookie’s food truck-like Tuggs Grub traveling food shuttle bills itself as a “traveling diner for diners traveling.”

Fort Ypso Lodge

The Fort Ypso Lodge on the Star War planet of Vandor serves as a saloon, gambling hall and droid-fighting arena. The timber-framed hall adorned with animal heads is known for attracting a rough crowd of gamblers looking to make their fortune at the sabacc table.

Smugglers Han Solo and Lando Calrissian first met over a game of sabacc at the Fort Ypso Lodge in the 2018 film “Solo.” At the Fort Ypso Lodge, Lando put his Millennium Falcon up against Han’s ship during a sabacc game and took the pot. In a rematch, Lando lost the Falcon to Han.

Galaxy’s Edge visitors will find a full-size Millennium Falcon docked at a shady intergalactic shipping business in the Black Spire village run by a space pirate working with Han’s old co-pilot Chewbacca. The ship serves as the marquee for the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run attraction.

Sabacc cards, chance cubes and other Star Wars games will be sold in the Toydarian Toymaker shop in Galaxy’s Edge.

Audio transmissions heard throughout the Black Spire village will elude to illicit activities, including illegal droid battles taking place in nearby districts of Batuu.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge debuts on May 31 at Disneyland and Aug. 29 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Citation :
Each visitor will need a Disneyland ticket and Galaxy’s Edge reservation to get into the new Star Wars land. Adult visitors 18 and older will need to bring a government-issued photo ID.

Only people with proper ID who are listed on the Galaxy’s Edge reservation will be admitted to the land. Reservations can’t be changed, modified, transferred or sold.

Disneyland will restrict visitors with Galaxy’s Edge reservations to a 4-hour time limit during the soft opening. No stand-by visitors will be permitted to enter Galaxy’s Edge during the reservation-only period.

Inside Disney's $1 billion 'Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge' theme park

"
Citation :
Star Wars" fans have a lot to look forward to in 2019. "The Mandalorian" debuts on Disney+ in November and "The Rise of Skywalker" hits theaters the following month. But for those who want to feel like they've truly been transported to a certain galaxy far, far away, nothing will rival the immersive experience of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge.

Billed as the largest expansion ever at Disney's theme parks, visitors who descend on Galaxy's Edge can fly the Millennium Falcon, grab a drink at Olga's Cantina and rub shoulders with Hondo Ohnaka, a pirate first introduced in the "Clone Wars" animated series.

Galaxy's Edge opens on May 31 at Disneyland in California and on August 29 at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida. CNN Business got an exclusive first look at the new theme land at Disneyland last month.

Scott Trowbridge, the creative force behind Galaxy's Edge, rendezvoused with us at its space port, Black Spire Outpost, to talk about what guests can expect when they show up.

So where are we?

We are in the heart of the space port at Black Spire Outpost, which is the kind of the center of this thriving, bustling, remote trading port on the planet Batuu.

It's been said that this is the most immersive land that Disney's ever done. Explain to me what that means.

I think when we say immersive, I think that means it's big. It has scale. It doesn't just reveal itself all to you in one view. You actually have to explore it a little bit. There are things to discover. It's also immersive because it has that attention to detail, and that attention to authenticity.

Why do you think that's important?

If everything looks like a very shallow facade, and there's no depth behind things, there's no ability for you to believe that there's an activity over there and someone lives in that apartment and that door goes someplace.

We want the experience to feel deep. We want the place to feel deep, so that your relationship with it can also have that kind of depth.

And that bleeds into the whole story of "Star Wars" itself.

The events that happen here in Black Spire Outpost are true in the world of "Star Wars." They're not isolated from the rest of "Star Wars" storytelling. The things that happen here are true throughout this entire kind of canon of "Star Wars" storytelling.

Okay, so I pilot the Millenium Falcon in Smuggler's Run, and let's say I lose my shipment. What would happen to me in the rest of this land?

You might sidle up to the bar, and the bartender at the cantina might lean over and say, "Hey, word on the street is Hondo's not too happy with you. I'd watch out if I were you, because I think your name's on the list of the local bounty hunter."

For those guests who want to play "Star Wars" with us, we have ways. Using their own personal technology, if you opt in, and want to play with us, you don't have to, there's no obligation, but there's an invitation to come and play "Star Wars" with us.

Is there anything you can tell me about the "Star Wars" hotel?

I can tell you it's not a hotel.

Okay, what is it?

Think of that as a sister project in Florida. At that experience we're going to invite you to spend a couple days in a "Star Wars" story — in a focused "Star Wars" story that takes place over a couple of days. More on that to come.

What is the most innovative technology you have in this land?

We have an experience here called Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance that's going to open later this year. And for the first time, we're actually making an attraction concept that I think is as epic in scope and scale as "Star Wars" is. So it's the biggest attraction we've ever built. It utilizes multiple, what we might call ride systems, all working together to create one experience.

Are you feeling a little bit of pressure?

We know we have to get it right for the fans. That's been something we felt from day one. People have been dreaming about stepping into this world for 40 years. There's a lot of high expectations about paying off 40 years of dreaming. On day one we knew we had to address that, over-deliver against those expectations. I hope we have.

How's the experience in Galaxy's Edge different than anywhere else in the Disney parks?

[Disneyland] is the park that Walt Disney himself oversaw personally and built. He created this. You can kind of think of it as the world's first virtual reality. He created these environments that you could walk into, believe that you were in these places, whether it was some tropical jungle or the Wild West, or some kind of futuristic world of tomorrow. He built these places, invited you to step into them, meet the characters who lived there and pretend.

I think what we've built with Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge is so far, the best example, the most, the largest and the most detailed example of what Walt [Disney] set out to do with the original Disneyland, that we've done yet to date.

How is this place going to tell the "Star Wars" story for the next 50 years?

This trading port is really a stepping off point for all kinds of new stories and we have so many stories we want to tell.

That's one of the great things about "Star Wars," there will never be an end to the number of "Star Wars" stories that we can tell.

Wink

Meet the actors reprising their Star Wars roles for Galaxy’s Edge characters at Disneyland

Actors Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac along with voice actors Frank Oz, Paul Reubens, Jim Cummings and Kipsang Rotich will reprise their Star Wars roles.

An A-list lineup of Star Wars actors who portrayed or voiced Yoda, Kylo Ren, Rey, Finn, Poe and even a beloved Star Tours droid pilot will return to the roles they made famous in the new Galaxy’s Edge themed land coming to Disneyland.

Actors Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac along with voice actors Frank Oz, Paul Reubens, Jim Cummings and Kipsang Rotich will reprise their Star Wars roles in the Black Spire Outpost village on the remote planet of Batuu, the setting for the new 14-acre themed lands coming to the Anaheim theme park and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida.

The Star Wars characters will show up in audio-animatronic, holographic and video form in Galaxy’s Edge attractions, experiential shops and the village’s cantina.

The timeline for the new themed land will be set in the latest Star Wars trilogy — meaning visitors won’t see familiar characters like Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo or Darth Vader in Black Spire Outpost. Galaxy’s Edge will be home to newer characters such as Rey, BB-8 and Kylo Ren who will be joined by old favorites such as Chewbacca, C-3PO and R2-D2.

Let’s take a closer look at the Star Wars characters who will be populating the Black Spire village and the actors who will be playing the parts in Galaxy’s Edge.

Yoda

The wise Jedi master who first appeared in “The Empire Strikes Back” will once again be voiced by Frank Oz.

The Star Wars puppeteer and voice actor also performed Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and Animal on “The Muppet Show” and Cookie Monster, Bert and Grover on “Sesame Street.”

Yoda trained Luke Skywalker in the ways of The Force in “The Empire Strikes Back.” What the small, green alien creature with pointy ears and clawed fingers lacked in size he more than made up for with his magical powers.

Disney has not announced where Yoda will appear in Galaxy’s Edge, but it makes sense for the legendary Jedi Knight to make regular appearances in Savi’s handbuilt lightsaber workshop. The Walt Disney Imagineering creative team has dropped hints that visitors will be greeted by an “old friend” in the build-your-own lightsaber experiential shop.

“It has some great moments of magic,” Imagineering executive creative director Chris Beatty said. “The finale is super, super cool. In the reveal at the end you’ll be visited by an old friend as part of the experience.”

DJ R-3X

A fan-favorite Star Tours droid who has found work as a cantina disc jockey in Galaxy’s Edge will once again be voiced by Paul Reubens.

“We were super excited to bring him back and no one was more excited than Paul,” Imagineering story editor Margaret Kerrison said. “He brought in a lot of inspiration and new lines for us. Let’s just say you will be thoroughly entertained in Oga’s Cantina.”

Reubens, best known for his role as Pee-wee Herman, originally voiced the Star Tours pilot in 1987 when the droid was known as RX-24, or simply Rex for short.

Reubens played Pee-wee Herman in movies, children’s television and on Broadway. His television acting credits include “Gotham,” “The Blacklist” and “30 Rock.”

Now known as DJ R-3X, Rex will man a disc jockey console at Oga’s Cantina in Galaxy’s Edge. The pilot-turned-DJ will spin an alien soundtrack described as Jawa meets new age meets 1980s pop. Reubens reprises his role as Rex during the three-hour set with lines such as “Hey everyone, who’s ready to boogie?”

Hondo Ohnaka

A dreadlocked alien creature with six tusk-like protrusions on his chin will serve as the proprietor of Ohnaka Transport Solutions and host of the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run flight simulator.

“Some would call him a space pirate,” said Asa Kalama, Walt Disney Imagineering executive creative director. “He would refer to himself as a totally legitimate businessman.”

Hondo Ohnaka will be voiced by Jim Cummings, reprising his role from the “Clone Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels” animated television series.

The renowned voice actor is known for his work as Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Darkwing Duck, Sonic the Hedgehog and the Tasmanian Devil.

Smugglers Run riders will receive their mission from an audio-animatronic Hondo before boarding the Millennium Falcon. Riders will also watch a video transmission from Hondo just before climbing into the Falcon’s cockpit.

Kylo Ren

The villain of the current trilogy of “Star Wars” films will be voiced in multiple forms in the Rise of the Resistance attraction by Adam Driver.

Driver, who first appeared as Kylo Ren in “The Force Awakens,” is also known for his roles in “BlacKkKlansman,” “Logan Lucky” and the HBO television show “Girls.”

Kylo Ren is instantly recognizable by his distinctive black and silver face-concealing combat helmet. The son of Han Solo and Princess Leia Organa changed his name from Ben Solo to Kylo Ren during his fall to the dark side of The Force.

The dark warrior will appear in multiple forms throughout the Rise of the Resistance ride. Kylo Ren interrogates riders inside a First Order detention cell during a walking portion of the long and elaborate attraction. The villain appears again in an animatronic form during the dark ride section of the attraction.

Rey

Daisy Ridley will reprise her breakthrough role as the heroine Rey in the latest trilogy of “Star Wars” films.

The English actress has voiced the character in Star Wars animated television series and video games.

Riders on the Rise of the Resistance will encounter a holographic Rey next to an animatronic BB-8 ball droid in the Ready Room portion of the attraction. Ridley’s character will ask us to join the Resistance and take part in a dangerous off-planet mission in a fight against the villainous First Order.

Poe Dameron

In the same Ready Room scene, riders will see a video transmission from Resistance pilot Poe Dameron, a trusted commander in the starfighter corps.

Oscar Isaac will reprise his role as Poe in the Rise of the Resistance attraction. Issac is also known for his performances in “Inside Llewyn Davis,” “A Most Violent Year” and “Ex Machina.”

Poe will serve as our wingman during the off-planet mission. Riders will rush out of the Ready Room past Poe’s distinctive black and orange X-wing starfighter. After boarding a Resistance transport ship, riders will see Poe climb into his X-wing from the cockpit window of the transport ship.

Nien Nunb

The transport ship on the Rise of the Resistance attraction will be piloted by an audio-animatronic Nien Nunb.

The jowl-faced, mouse-eyed arms dealer and smuggler piloted the Millennium Falcon with Lando Calrissian in “Return of the Jedi.”

Nien Nunb was originally voiced in “Return of the Jedi” by Kipsang Rotich, then a San Francisco Bay Area student who moved back to his home in Kenya.

“When we decided we were going to bring Nien Nunb back for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, we actually went to Kenya, tracked him down, to record the original voice actor for Nien Nunb,” Imagineering portfolio creative executive Scott Trowbridge said.

Aboard the departing transport ship, Nien Nunb will communicate with Resistance pilot Poe Dameron and bark orders at his passengers from the cockpit.

Standing riders will feel the floor shake and move throughout the experience aboard the transport ship.

Finn

Another member of the rebel forces from the current “Star Wars” trilogy will play a key role in the Rise of the Resistance attraction.

Stormtrooper turned Resistance fighter Finn will be reprised by John Boyega, who first portrayed the character in “The Force Awakens.”

The English actor has voiced Finn in Star Wars animated television series and video games. Boyega also starred in the 2018 film “Pacific Rim: Uprising.”

Finn was trained from birth to serve as a First Order stormtrooper known only as FN-2187. After helping Resistance pilot Poe Dameron escape the First Order, Finn switched sides and joined the Resistance alongside Rey and BB-8.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge debuts on May 31 at Disneyland and Aug. 29 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida.

How Disneyland will enforce the 4-hour reservation window for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Stragglers will be dealt with by the First Order stormtroopers patrolling the land.

Disneyland expects that four hours will be enough time for most visitors to explore Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge during the initial reservation-only period and that scoundrels who overstay their welcome will be dealt with by a squadron of stormtroopers.

Disneyland will restrict visitors with free Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge reservations to a 4-hour time limit during an initial “soft opening” period of the highly anticipated new themed land at the Anaheim theme park.

Star Wars fans hoping to explore Galaxy’s Edge between May 31 and June 23 will need to secure a reservation in order to get into the land. No reservations will be needed to enter Galaxy’s Edge beginning June 24.

Disneyland will issue colored wristbands to visitors during the reservation-only period for each of the four-hour windows. Newly-admitted Galaxy’s Edge visitors will mix in with those already in the land much like the Halloween events at Disneyland.

After each four-hour window ends, Disneyland employees may turn away visitors with expired wristbands attempting to enter the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run attraction, Oga’s Cantina cocktail lounge, Docking Bay 7 restaurant and the Savi’s Workshop and Droid Depot experiential shops.

“At a certain point, if we have to, then we’ll start to ask them to leave the land,” said Disneyland vice president Kris Theiler.

Disneyland expects that most visitors will find four hours to be more than enough time to explore the new 14-acre Star Wars land.

“Four hours is a long time in the land,” Theiler said. “Most guests are going to find that they’re ready to roll after four hours.”

Stragglers will be dealt with by the First Order stormtroopers patrolling the land.

“We’ll be utilizing the troopers to help us, for sure,” Theiler joked.

The reservation system has been designed to manage crowds and minimize wait times while keeping the land below capacity.

“It will be an awesome time to visit the land,” Theiler said.

The goal is to keep the wait times for Smugglers Run under two hours, Theiler said. Accommodations will be made if the attraction should experience any downtime.

The wait time for Smugglers Run will balloon if everybody entering Galaxy’s Edge heads straight for the attraction. Disney hopes to disperse visitors throughout the land during the reservation-only period and persuade riders to postpone their journey on Smugglers Run until the second or third hour of their visit when wait times will be less.

“We want to try and make sure that people aren’t spending the whole time standing in the queue,” Theiler said.

At the same time, Disney doesn’t want riders waiting until the last minute of their four-hour window to get in line for Smugglers Run.

“We want each group to feel like they had an awesome experience,” Theiler said.

Disneyland will use the upcoming employee previews to see how visitors behave in the land and make adjustments before the May 31 grand opening of Galaxy’s Edge.
