‘Strange World’ is out in movie theatres today, and perhaps mostly importantly for me, is that the world finally gets to meet Ethan, the first openly gay lead in a movie by Disney Animation. Also voiced by @jaboukie

I got to contribute early into this character’s development and although my time on this production was shorter - I left Disney Anim for a year but recently returned - I poured all of myself and experiences into this character so he’d be in safe hands for the rest of production. I’m at a point in my career where content and context is much more valuable to me than getting design the most elaborate, ‘bells and whistles’ type of character. Ethan, his queer identity, and what that on screen representation can do for people, young and old, who want to be seen, valued, validated, visible, protected, embraced and celebrated - that’s where my focus and intention is at. I didn’t have that growing up - I didn’t feel safe - but I know that Ethan would have made me feel braver and that’s all I can hope for any other person that should flourish in their identity.

It’s very easy to be excited for the world to see this character, but it isn’t lost on me that just a few days ago we lost five queer lives in a shooting targeting our community. One gay lead isn’t enough. We need continued, authentic and real stories to be told to combat these hateful acts.
