Orlando Business Journal - LAKE BUENA VISTA -- Dining at Walt Disney World's Epcot theme park is about to get a makeover.

Most of the popular internationally themed restaurants in Epcot's World Showcase area have begun to show their age, say some restaurant operators.

Four major eateries will undergo overhauls in the next year -- those in the theme park's Italy, Japan, China and Mexico pavilions.

Three Disney-operated restaurants in Epcot are getting minor touchups -- in the United Kingdom, Canada and Germany pavilions.

In addition, the planned makeover of the restaurant in the France pavilion is still in design, and won't start for a year or two.

Big bucks
Eight major eateries in the park's pavilions opened 25 years ago, and contracts signed then between Disney -- at a time when the entertainment giant was eager to create culinary credibility -- are coming up for renewal.

While Disney won't reveal any dollar amounts for these deals -- and the restaurant operators are guarding the competitive details of their contracts closely -- one participant says it's big bucks.

Contract re-negotiations this time around focused on longer terms and larger capital commitments than previously, says Ricky Debler, president of San Angel Inn LLC, which runs the Mexico pavilion restaurants in Epcot.

"Disney needs improvements and capital investments in Epcot," says Debler. "This is a way to revitalize and update the pavilions. All together, it's a huge chunk of money."

Goodbye, Alfredo
The biggest change is in the Italy pavilion.

L'Originale Alfredo di Roma Ristorante will close Aug. 31, and a new operator, the Patina Restaurant Group, will reopen the space the next day, operating a generic Italian restaurant with a different menu until the summer of 2008, when it will close for remodeling. It will open again late next year with a new name, new look and new menu.

Alfredo's management would not comment on Disney's decision. The company, Alfredo, the Original of Rome (Fla.) Inc., is run by Russell Bellanca, son of the man who owned the North American rights to the use of the name of the original Roman restaurant. Disney says it's the most popular at Epcot, grossing more than $20 million last year.

The decision to change the Italian restaurant operator came about as a business opportunity to modernize the eatery, says Memo Emec, Disney's regional manager of operating participants.

Those close to Alfredo's say the company's management was surprised by the decision. It's possible the company will use the value of the Alfredo's brand and relocate off Disney property, perhaps in a non-Disney hotel in Lake Buena Vista.

Hello, sushi
Meanwhile, in Epcot's Japan pavilion, Tempura Kiku and the Matsunoma Lounge have been demolished to make way for a new Japanese eatery with an emphasis on sushi, says Memo.

As yet unnamed, the redesign will take advantage of the views of the World Showcase area of Epcot from the second floor seating area when it reopens, currently slated for Aug. 25.

The China pavilion in Epcot has added new tea kiosk, The Joy of Tea, which opened in March and features an array of popular cold and hot teas, including the whimsical bubble tea -- fruit flavors with small tapioca pearls drunk through an oversized straw.

The quick-serve Lotus Blossom Cafe has gotten an updated look without losing traditional menu items.

The main restaurant, Nine Dragons, will close in early 2008 for a revamp. The kitchen, says Memo, will be redesigned to allow guests to interact with the chefs at five different stations, ordering and watching the food being prepared.

Tequila toast
During a makeover of the ride in Epcot's Mexico pavilion, Disney also added 25 more seats to the San Angel Inn restaurant.

At the end of this summer, Debler will open a 50- to 60-seat tequila bar in a former retail shop, emphasizing the historical and cultural aspects of the classic Mexican beverage.

Major changes are planned for the pavilion's outdoor eatery, Cantina de San Angel, including a kitchen expansion, realigning seating areas to improve the view of the World Showcase lagoon and a new menu -- all expected to be done by next summer.

Moreover, three other original World Showcase restaurants will see varying degrees of change: Le Cellier in the Canada pavilion, the Biergarten in the Germany pavilion and the Rose & Crown Pub & Restaurant in the United Kingdom pavilion are scheduled for minor rehabilitation.

The two other major sponsored restaurants, in the French and Moroccan pavilions, won't see any changes until at least 2008. Insiders say both pavilions sponsors are on track to continue their presence, and at least one, Chefs de France, will see some major updating if negotiations proceed as planned.

To be run by an external vendor, this new restaurant in DAK's Asia will have a table-service area and a counter-service area, and will inhabit two floors. It may open in Spring 2008, though they are aiming for late 2007. Table service will be available for lunch and dinner. Counter service will be open for all three meal times. A press release from August 2007 reads:

In 2007, Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park Guests will be able to enjoy both a table service and quick service restaurant in Asia. Schussler Creative and Landry's, best known on property for the Rainforest Cafe, will build an approximately 17.000 square foot two story restaurant. This will be the first Operating Participant to operate a dining facility within the Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park.
Geographically, the restaurant will be located in the mythical town of Anandapur, a small, poor, rural village in the Himalayan foothills, just steps away from the new Expedition Everest - Legend of the Forbidden Mountain attraction. The grand old house of one of Anandapur's wealthiest merchants has been converted to this fine indoor dining experience featuring his collection of artifacts including statues, fine tapestries and 900 pound, gold inlaid silk puppets. The outdoor seating area will be set amongst lush greenery, authentic artifacts, fountains and a sacred lingham stone river.
This Asian-fusion establishment will offer table-service dining, a full service bar, as well as quick-service food and beer garden options, along with retail offerings from Pan Asia ranging from silk purses, incense and saris to fine teapots. It will seat 250 inside for table service dining and 350 in their quick service courtyard.

Yak & Yeti, first full-service restaurant inside Animal Kingdom opens today

Yak & Yeti, the first full-service restaurant in Disney’s Animal Kingdom park, opens today at 11 a.m. If you’re too hungry to wait you can get faster food at the quick-service part of the operation beginning at 1030 a.m.
The menu in the full-service side of Yak & Yeti is pan-Asian, with dishes inspired by Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese and Indian cuisines. The quick-service menu is primarily Chinese.
The pan-Asian menu, I was told, is limited in scope because of the restaurant’s location in the park. What does that mean? That it’s hard to get supplies inside the Animal Kingdom?

No, it means, says general manager Marty Sherman, that because it’s inside the park – and especially because it’s the only full-service restaurant – the menu is shorter so people spend less time deciding what they want to eat. In other words, they would like you to hurry up and decide, eat and then leave so that other guests can fill the seats.
the full-service restaurant seats 250 and there are 350 seats outdoors for quick-service eating. Those tables are available to all park guests, even if they bought food from another location.
Only walkups will be accepted for now. Y. & Y., which is operated by Landry’s Restaurants, the same folks who own Rainforest Café on the outer edge of the park, will start answering the reservation lines beginning Dec. 1 for those wanting to book a table beginning Jan. 1. You’ll be able to book through the main Disney reservation number, 407-939-3463 (WDW-DINE) or by calling the restaurant direct at 407-824-9384 (YETI).
Yak & Yeti has a staff of 180. A third of the workers came from Animal Kingdom’s Rainforest Café, another third from the Rainforest at Downtown Disney, and the rest are new hires.
I’ll have a review of the food at a later date, but if you start hearing people refer to it as Yuk & Yeti, you’ll have a clue on early critiques.

Yak & Yeti: Don't Let the Name Scare You (Though the Prices Might)
Last Wednesday, the Yak & Yeti frantically applied the finishing touches and threw open its doors to the public. The event drew managers from around the resort - I caught my first-ever glimpse of Imagineer Joe Rohde - and attracted a curious public of mostly-locals, at least for lunch.
The verdict? A bit expensive, but nothing too startling. The food, meanwhile, was hit or miss on this first day. The misses were not awful; they just didn't seem worth the price (the child's eggroll leads this list). The hits, though, were sublime. We recommend in particular the lettuce wrap appetizer, and either of the fish (mahi mahi or salmon) for the entree. Plate sizes were quite large.

A small line formed before the first opening.

Service was inexcusably slow at first, but we later learned why: the computers had gone down for the day, and a million first-day glitches were happening at the same time (Murphy's law at work). Also, more than half the cast seemed brand new and didn't really know what to do in any given situation. Did they rush open the restaurant before training could be completed?

There's a quick-service location around the side, and a
drinks-only counter around the corner yet again.

Inside you'll find a continuation of the rich theming seen elsewhere in DAK, especially in Asia. That translates to a kind of lived-in clutter. There are artifacts all over, many of them religious in nature, owing to the theme of the place as a hotel/eatery next to the mystical and religious Everest in real life (you don't think they'd invent the name Yak & Yeti without a historical precedent, do you? It grosses people out as it is).

This was supposedly once a courtyard.

I think I overheard one host telling a party, on the way to being seated, that the staircase was authentic and from India, but I can't be sure of that detail. Hosts provide a fake history of the building as you are seated - for instance, the first room was once supposedly an open courtyard. I didn't get to hear more, though, because I was seated about ten feet from the check in podium and wasn't led around the restaurant. I wish they'd offered me an optional tour on the way to the table. If Buca di Beppo can do it, walking you around the whole place before returning where you started, why not Yak & Yeti?

You might get to see this, or you might not.

We ordered too much food (two large appetizers is too much, and we weren't hungry for the dessert), but still, $95 is pricey for two adults and one toddler. We only had one drink, and it was non-alcoholic (and there were no free refills).
The restaurant is half owned by Landry's, and half by the guy who created the T-Rex and Rainforest Cafe concepts (he sold them off to Landry's to operate, but is keeping half the interest in Yak & Yeti). As a result of this outside ownership, so far the Disney Dining Experience is not being accepted.

Clutter!

Bottom line is that we'll be back, but we'll be ordering less. We'll bring our kids pre-stuffed with pretzels, and we'll share just one appetizer and one entree, and only drink water. Then the price will be very much worth it, since some of these dishes are divine. (As befits the restaurant at the foot of the holy mountain Everest.)

This hallway has a view of the walkway below.

Outside the main building, a counter service location has opened as well. Sporting mostly Chinese dishes (the pan-Asian concept is stronger inside the sit-down restaurant), the outdoor facility has a dramatically smaller menu. I've heard anecdotally it's not that impressive.
I do like all the seating available, but I despair that the indoor part is only for the sit down restaurant. DAK needs more air-conditioned places, including ones that you can simply walk into and rest for a while. They missed an opportunity here. Worse, since another walk-in counter service place has converted to buffet (see the next item), DAK has actually gotten worse, not better, in the air-conditioning department.

Movies you may have never heard of.

As for reservations, you can't call to make reservations until December 3, at which point you may phone them up and request any point from January 4 onward. Until January 4, the restaurant accepts only walk up traffic.
