I saw Aladdin in the theater 8 times. Genie was the reason I wanted to be an animator. What an incredible experience to be able to animate this shot with the great Eric Goldberg. Olaf and Genie together, I almost can’t believe it. Thank you to @trentanimation and @sharktooth72 for making this beautiful short, and for making this dream moment possible. #disney#disneyanimation#animation#olaf#genie#blessed
To celebrate the Year of the Dragon (2024), I was asked to #animate Mushu for the first time in over 25 years! I will share that post in a couple of weeks. In the meantime here’s some never before seen #modelsheets from the OG #Mulan film! These are just four of probably 12 total that were created throughout the film, for both the animators and the clean up departments. #disneyanimation#mushu Do you want to see some more Mushu BTS from Mulan?
A little bit of my animation from #treasureplanet for #disember I tried to flip it so you could see the motion but it kept skipping. Sorry, I tried. Also, I have call out @alikigreeky who worked with me on TP and did the ruff inbetweens on this scene. So a special thanks to her because a lot of these drawings are hers. Hope people enjoy. #jimhawkins#roughanimation
Merci. Le spectacle continue." - Dan Abraham
In honor of Walt Disney's birthday today, I thought I would post my storyboards fromour Walt and Mickey moment. Trent Correy and I knew we wanted a moment in the short where Mickey would honor Walt, but the thought of it was pretty daunting. What would Mickey say? How much time do you spend on it? We thought for sure this would be something we were going to work and rework and rework but as it turned out, the first version we wrote and layered "Feed the Birds" under it in editorial it just...felt right to us. Here's to you Walt. None of us would be here at the studio if you hadn't stayed with it and pushed through the hard times, the box office disappointments and the people saying you were nuts. Thank you. On with the show. #onceuponastudio#wdas#waltdisneyanimationstudios#disney#waltdisney#disneyanimation#mickeymouse#storyboards#disneystoryboards#thanks#onwiththeshow#burbank#california

Yesterday was another truly magical day at Disney Animation. My co-directing pal Trent Correy and I were able to screen our short “Once Upon a Studio” for the original voice cast of Bambi! That movie came out 81 years ago and it was a thrill to meet (l to r) Peter Behn (Thumper) Donnie Dunagan (Bambi) and Stan Alexander (Flower). And of course I had to get my Art of Bambi book signed! #wdas#waltdisneyanimationstudios#disney#disneyanimation#bambi#onceuponastudio#disneylegend#thumper#flower#animalsofinstagram

The original voices of Young #Bambi, #Thumper and #Flower came in to talk to us at Disney Animation They had such great stories about Walt and being such young kids in the film. The were all very emotional when talking about it which got me emotional.

#strangeworld a painting I started very early on. I was so happy it finds its way back to the show in last months of the production. The last version in the show is not this one it's actual cg version of it.
Visdev for #baymax! I made early on in development. It was fun to revisit #sanfransokyo I was also asked to make a map of possible new districts that could inspire new set locations. #visdev#disneyanimation#baymax#bh6
Early development for Clade Family farms. I really wanted to see more terraced or vertical farming to make the world more unique. These were mostly for story just to have something to board off of. #strangeworld#disneyanimation#conceptart#farmhouse
Early vis dev work for Disney's Strange World based on Scott Watanabe's early beautiful work @_scottwatanabe_ Congrats to Don hall and the crew for a beautiful film!!
Strange World early visdev exploration... characters based on early designs by the brilliant and way too nice @megprk!! Director Don Hall and @_scottwatanabe_ for inspiration at this early time.
The last of the 3 early Strange World moments that I did for Director Don Hall very early on in the genesis of the film. The attacking ship is again based on an amazing @_scottwatanabe_ design

‘Strange World’ is out in movie theatres today, and perhaps mostly importantly for me, is that the world finally gets to meet Ethan, the first openly gay lead in a movie by Disney Animation. Also voiced by @jaboukie
I got to contribute early into this character’s development and although my time on this production was shorter - I left Disney Anim for a year but recently returned - I poured all of myself and experiences into this character so he’d be in safe hands for the rest of production. I’m at a point in my career where content and context is much more valuable to me than getting design the most elaborate, ‘bells and whistles’ type of character. Ethan, his queer identity, and what that on screen representation can do for people, young and old, who want to be seen, valued, validated, visible, protected, embraced and celebrated - that’s where my focus and intention is at. I didn’t have that growing up - I didn’t feel safe - but I know that Ethan would have made me feel braver and that’s all I can hope for any other person that should flourish in their identity.
It’s very easy to be excited for the world to see this character, but it isn’t lost on me that just a few days ago we lost five queer lives in a shooting targeting our community. One gay lead isn’t enough. We need continued, authentic and real stories to be told to combat these hateful acts. Please go and see ‘Strange World’ and champion this character and click the link in my bio for ways to help the friends and family effected by the Colorado shootings - #disney#disneyanimation#strangeworld#strangeworlddisney#characterdesign#visualdevelopment#queerartist#ethan
Second assignment on #encanto movie. Design/worbook on the abuela song flashback scenes. Being quite fresh on the project I mostly followed the storyboard. It didn't made it in the movie but one of them made it in the book to my surprise. If somebody can credit the storyboard artist he is the most welcome. #Encanto#encantodisneymovie#encantofilm#encantomovie#casita#disneyencanto#disney

The jumbotron. This is the code name for the flower screen seen on the Isabela song. I think I was a little too shy, today, after 10 month at Disney I will go wilder. Image 3 shows firsts intentions I did suffer on the last image, I never could have it right. Having even a panic attack episode on one morning, believing I was letting the wonderfull team down. But @camille.andre.art, @lorelay_bove and Ian Gooding were great help.

Some visual exploration for the background flower screens in the Isabela song. These were mostly done at morning, warming up before working on other designs. SPOILER - Isabela song "free" dress. It was kind of fun to " trash" the "señorita perfecta" dress in a colorfull and chaotic way. I remembered as a kid in a rainy day in the countryside trying to catch a frog with my sister, to our joy and to our mom despair, and used that memory to get the right mindset of the 2 sisters getting wild and playfull. The third image is a early version and the last one is the darker color I used as a base to add the colors. I'm sorry @neysabove, I had to throw some paint on your beautiful dress design. #encanto#disneyencanto#disneyanimationstudios#visualdevelopment#casita#colombia

This is the second batch - and last- for the Isabela's song face look. It never made into the movie, except for the hair. I guess it may be too much trouble to read the expressions with too much colors on her face. Still, it was fun to break the classic Disney princess look.
Another set of backgrounds for Far From the Tree. I painted them traditionally using pencil and copic markers, and then assembled them in Photoshop (see previous post!). . Since the paintings are used as the actual backgrounds for the final shots I also draw/paint the characters in place (original character designs by the brilliant @jamwoods_) to guide downstream departments, including lighting, for which these also served as the lighting keys. . The backgrounds are a bit larger than they will appear in the final shots (note the red and blue lines in the bottom two paintings) to allow for flexibility later on (for example if we decide to adjust the framing of the shot, or need to perform a simple camera move). Enjoy! . #farfromthetree#disney#disneyanimation#waltdisneyanimationstudios#animator#artistsoninstagram#animationart#encanto

Another one of my background paintings from Far From the Tree. Each layer is painted traditionally on paper using pencil and copic markers and then scanned and assembled in photoshop. . 1) The final shot in the film. . 2) This shot has a slight camera push-in, so I had to paint the trees, sky, and haystack rock (beloved icon of the Oregon coast!) as separate layers. The painted clouds and water were elegantly animated using Nuke by the incredible lighting team (led by @rogerlee.art), so I paint them as separate layers as well. . 3) I draw/paint the characters in place to communicate to downstream departments how they should appear in the shot. This also serves as the lighting key for the lighting team. . 4) The final painting in layers with the additional trees (which will also be subtly animated by lighting to match the camera push-in). . In Disney’s Far From the Tree, the characters are CG animated, but the backgrounds are painted in a more traditional manner. Here’s a simple behind-the-scenes look at a typical shot. . 1) I begin the background painting by using traditional marker and pencil on photo paper based on a simple modeled layout and camera setup defined by the incredibly versatile @joabaldwin (see step 2). Once I’m happy with the marker sketch I scan and assemble the pieces in photoshop until arriving at the final background painting. I also draw/paint the characters in place to visually explain to downstream departments how they should appear in the shot. . 2) @joabaldwin then updates the rough 3D model to match the final painting, which then becomes the foundation for the placement of the characters for animation, and also because we need it to make the film work in stereo (3D)! . 3) The CG animation team (led by the brilliant @chadsellz) creates the tear jerking and/or hilarious character performance. The characters are then rendered flat and receive a visual treatment (lines, shadows, eye specs) to make them “appear” 2d animated (this was a technique I originally developed for a short circuit project - Exchange Student, also directed by @tallychyck, more on that in a future post). Finally, the Lighting team (led by the innovative @rogerlee.art) integrates the characters with the background and adds the finishing artistic touches (reflections, water movement, caustics, dynamic shadows), to make the shot sing! This was actually one of the dozen or so shots I also lit for the film. . Far From the Tree was a labor of love for all who worked on it and I couldn’t be more proud of the team and the final result. Enjoy the film in theaters with Encanto! . #farfromthetree#disney#disneyanimation#animation#encanto#conceptdesign#conceptart#productiondesign#waltdisneyanimationstudios
This was the first completed shot of Far From the Tree, from which we learned so much about how to animate and then integrate the cg characters (meant to look hand drawn) with a 2d traditionally painted environment. This shot also includes a subtle camera move which also posed a challenge. . Once this shot was finished I was confident in the technique and that we could make it work for the rest of the project. . 1) My first background painting (of 92 paintings in total!) for Far From the Tree, done traditionally using copic markers and pencil and then scanned and assembled in photoshop. I also draw/paint the characters in place to guide the downstream departments. . 2) The completed shot from the film! Here’s another background painting from Far From the Tree which I painted traditionally and then assembled in photoshop … but what does that mean exactly? Here’s what: . 1) Final background painting (to provide context for the following slides). I also paint the characters in place to guide downstream departments. . 2) Layout render (roughly modeled by the versatile @joabaldwin), which I use for reference in order to make sure the camera and characters will be in sync. This is actually the starting point. . 3) Scanned pencil and copic marker drawing/painting of the tree element done on real paper to match the rough model … I had to paint many elements like this in separate pieces in order for the 3d and camera moves to work! . 4- Cutting out and assembling the scanned pieces in photoshop! . 9) The final shot from the film, first animated in cg by @bhomman, then with the 2d character look technique and dappled lighting applied by the incredible lighting team! . Go see Far From the Tree on the big screen with Encanto while you still can!
I was honestly really thankful to have been given the chance to make the colour script for the short. I’ve never made one before (and am usually too scared to paint when there are way more qualified artists to do it) but @tallychyck gave me a chance and @dethancooper_art guided me through the process. I still have a long way to go, but I was proud of it . - #farfromthetree#disney#disneyanimation#visualdevelopment
Early color script for Far From the Tree, the beautiful short showing before Encanto in theaters now. Painted over the existing storyboards… Thanks to @tallychyck for directing such a charming short and allowing me to contribute For students, the idea behind this was to capture both the mood and the light of the Pacific Northwest area…. Starting off neutral sunlight/ complimentary shadows, then darker and cooler to feel more foreboding… and finally beautiful twilight towards the end…

Sauf que se balader avec un poisson, vivant ou mort, est plus "problématique" qu'une saucisse (qui en plus est plus proche d'une carotte, et donc du design habituel du personnage)
Our small and mighty story team @sharktooth72 @cisforfrenchfry @seth.boyden.art @dlee08 were so FUN to work with. I love the collaborative process and story geniuses @disneyanimation , they bring the laughs, and the heart to every drawing and panel they do Pictured above are some early sketches...we drew a lot of noses Do you have a favorite? We were really trying to emulate a board driven story room, where the best ideas rise to the top and the story artists have freedom to play. I love looking back on these, from over a year ago in June 2019.

Part 2 #onceuponasnowman behind the scenes! As I mentioned in my last post, this idea started wayyyy back in 2012/2013 with some simple doodles...and for years I chipped away at it, on and off in many different forms. A short film, a children’s book, a musical(more to come)...because I truly felt this was an idea worth pursuing, I just had no idea how, when or if it would ever happen. Finally, I saw an opportunity for this little short to have a home, when @disneyplus launched and @disneyanimation was starting to look for new ideas. SO, I pulled together 6-7 years worth of doodles, ideas and writing and put a pitch package together! More to come about pitching and how @sharktooth72 and I partnered up to work on this fun little project!!!
