The Chinese characters representing the specific date and time chosen to open its doors to the public – May 20 at 1:14 p.m. (我爱你一生一世), represents highly popular social media code among young people as a time to openly express love and long-term commitment to each other.

Big turnout as Disney’s store opens

There were long queues outside Walt Disney Co’s first retail store in China after it opened yesterday afternoon.

Disney fans formed a kilometer long queue before its opening at 13:14 in Pudong. Some of them stood in the queue for almost three hours before they managed to get a look at the store inside.

“Taking into account the safety and space of customers, a dedicated queuing system was set up during peak time,” said Xuan Wen, a communications manager with the store.

She said the store had plenty in stock to ensure every visitor got what they wanted.

Customers were allowed into the store till 10pm.

Reyna, from California, was the first to get a look inside the store in Lujiazui. She came as early as 5am to see how the world’s biggest Disney flagship store looked like.

More than 2,000 Disney products, including clothing, smartphone covers, stationery and bags, are being sold in the Shanghai store. The prices of products range from about 20 yuan (US$3.2) to more than 1,000 yuan, about 20-50 yuan costlier than the stores in the Hong Kong and Tokyo parks.

The Shanghai Disney Resort, the first on the mainland, is expected to open in 2016.

China's flagship Disney store opens to large crowds despite higher prices

Walt Disney's flagship store in Shanghai was off to a frenetic start yesterday as hundreds of mainland consumers poured into the outlet to snap up their long-coveted toys and clothes.

The first Disney store on the mainland, the world's largest of its kind, opened its doors at 1.15pm, but latecomers had to spend a few hours queueing outside the entrance.

"We come today for limited-edition Disney products because they are worth buying," said Chen Long, a 21-year-old Shanghai resident.

"I don't mind a long wait; I'm just afraid the items will be sold out by the time I get in."

The store in Lujiazui financial district can accommodate 300 shoppers with its 860 square metres of indoor retail space where more than 2,000 products are available for sale.

In the afternoon, at least 500 people were lined up outside the main gate despite prices of the products in Shanghai being more expensive than those in Disney shops in Hong Kong and Tokyo.

A security guard said several customers arrived at the store at 4am, largely beating company officials' expectations even though they had foreseen a keen interest from mainlanders in Mickey Mouse products.

From today, the store will open daily from 10am to 10pm.

Disney plans to open its US$5.4 billion resort in Pudong next spring. It had delayed opening the Shanghai Disney Resort this year partly because of redesigns to some attractions, the company said.

Local residents have been excited about the prospect of visiting the new theme park.

"The people's craze for Disney is unbelievable," the security guard said. "You can imagine how crowded it will be when the theme park finally opens its doors."

The façade of the Disney store features a 5,000 square metre outdoor square featuring flowerbeds in the shapes of iconic Disney images.

The store opened a day after the topping out of the theme park's iconic central attraction, the Enchanted Storybook Castle. The castle was the tallest, largest and most complex Disney castle ever built, Disney said.

The Shanghai Disney Resort is the company's sixth theme park around the world and is likely to compete with its Hong Kong counterpart for visitors.

But Disney played down rivalry between the two resorts, insisting the mammoth Chinese market was big enough for two such attractions.

"We do have complaints about the higher prices, but we can't turn down the children's requests to buy the toys," said Amie Yan, a Shanghai resident in her late 30s. "We want to be here to have first-hand experience and be part of the Disney culture."

Citation :
A Disney ambassador who brims with goodwill

Jennie Xu, a learning and development specialist at Disney University, never expected to add ambassador to her list of duties.

She is the first such ambassador chosen to represent Shanghai Disney Resort, which is due to open in spring next year.

“When I decided to join the selection process, I thought it might be a unique experience for me,” she said. “Now, well I’m simply overjoyed to have been chosen.”

During her two-year term through 2016, she will represent “cast members” of the resort in promoting the new Disney resort across the mainland and in the local community. Xu’s “magic moments” with Disney actually started about five years ago, when the new graduate joined Disney English as an assistant trainer to teach English to children aged between two and 12.

“Three years spent with children have enriched my Disney experience, which might have been helpful in the selection for ambassador,” Xu said.

Her role was later expanded to provide orientation training to new Disney English teachers. In 2012, she joined Shanghai Disney Resort as a learning and development specialist at Disney University, where she continued orientation training for new cast members and Imagineers.

As a trainer, Xu has become very familiar with Disney’s culture and values.

“I was curious about Disney ambassadors, so I applied when the selection process was opened to company employees last year,” she recalled. “I don’t know exactly how many people applied, but I knew the competition would be tough.”

The selection process involved rigorous written exams and personal interviews with top managers.

“The questions were mainly about communication skills, but I think they also wanted to gauge our passion for the heritage and culture of Disney,” Xu said.

When she was asked during an interview to describe her “most magical moment” working for Disney, Xu recounted a heartwarming party her colleagues organized to mark her first five years of service with the company.

“My teammates made a short film depicting my working during those five years, and each of my colleagues sent their best wishes to me in the video,” Xu said. “My eyes swelled with tears as I realized what a big and caring family we had become.”

The selection process ran for over two months. During that time, Xu said she didn’t really feel she would be chosen but the experience itself was enlightening. When the result was announced, Xu said she was absolutely delighted to be named Shanghai Disney Resort’s first ambassador.

Founder Walt Disney began the ambassador program five decades ago to represent himself and cast members at events in the community.

Although the responsibilities have changed over time, the ambassadors still play an important role in Disney resorts.

They are “cheerleaders” to boost employee morale, “bridges” to link different levels in the corporation and “spokespeople” at Disney events and community activities. They visit places such as schools and hospitals, participating in various volunteer projects.

Xu has already begun her work. Last month on World Earth Day, she joined Disney volunteers to visit a local primary school to talk to students about environmental protection, with the aid of interactive games.

“I do feel a great responsibility,” she said of her new role. “And I look forward to the grand opening of Shanghai Disney Resort. I hope together with all of our cast members, we can help create lifetime Disney memories for our guests once the resort is open.”

First Disneytown Tenants Announced for Shanghai Disney Resort

Disneytown Offers Unique Dining, Shopping and World-Class Entertainment

While construction continues on Shanghai Disney Resort, the resort today announced the names of the first tenants for its exciting shopping, dining and entertainment district, Disneytown. The tenants include well-known and trusted local and international brands including renowned restaurants Shanghai Min, Crystal Jade, and The Cheesecake Factory operated by Hong Kong Maxim’s Group, as well as various retail options including stores under I.T group, i.t and BAPE STORE®, and a LEGO Brand Retail store. Other exciting high-profile brands including Food Republic, Coconut Paradise, The Dining Room, Hatsune, blue frog, Xin Wang Restaurant, BreadTalk, Toast Box, and Chow Tai Fook will also be the first of several dozen tenants that will work closely with Shanghai Disney Resort to offer world-class shopping and dining options.

Shopping, dining and entertainment areas are key features of Disney resorts around the world, helping guests enjoy an integrated resort experience alongside world-class theme parks and hotels. Shanghai Disney Resort’s Disneytown will initially be comprised of a 46,000 square meter pedestrian-access area and will be located next door to Shanghai Disneyland, and within walking distance from both Shanghai Disneyland Hotel and Toy Story Hotel. When the resort celebrates its grand opening in spring of 2016, Disneytown will feature nearly 50 tenants including a high-quality, diverse mix of retailers – premium, affordable luxury and fast fashion options – and exciting restaurants for families and convention guests alike. While located next to the theme park, there will be no charge for admission to this unique area.

“Shanghai Disney Resort has worked closely with Chinese and international partners to develop new, fresh and exciting versions of these brands for guests visiting Disneytown,” said Philippe Gas, general manager of Shanghai Disney Resort. “This area will offer a distinctive Disney experience, treating guests by both day and night to great dining, shopping and entertainment amid beautiful open-air promenades and lakeshore charm.”

With Chinese guests in mind, Disneytown has been designed by an international creative team to demonstrate the perfect blend of Disney traditions and classic Chinese and Shanghai design and cultural elements, including traditional Shikumen architecture in homage to the unique heritage of Shanghai. Disneytown will be composed of five distinct districts, including Lakeshore, Marketplace, Spice Alley, Broadway Boulevard, and Broadway Plaza, to create a variety of experiences and unique offerings within each district.

Tenants of Disneytown will work closely with Shanghai Disney Resort to provide exclusive dining, shopping and entertainment experiences by tailoring every detail of the venues – from the decorations to menu design. Dining options will vary across the districts. Guests may enjoy fine dining experiences at upscale table service restaurants in the romantic theatre district, Broadway Plaza, where Shanghai Min and Crystal Jade will provide authentic Shanghainese and Cantonese cuisine with stunning views of Shanghai Disneyland from both balconies. The first Asia flagship restaurant of The Cheesecake Factory operated by Hong Kong Maxim’s Group and blue frog’s new-concept restaurant will be featured in Broadway Boulevard. Spice Alley will offer a variety of popular Asian cuisines in a casual, yet eclectic and fun environment and its dining experiences will offer something for everyone, including unique Southeast Asian cuisine and local Chinese delights from Food Republic, Thai food from Coconut Paradise and new Shanghainese dim sum and cuisine from The Dining Room. Casual dining experiences will be provided in Marketplace by Xin Wang Restaurant, the all-day Cantonese tea house, as well as fresh bakeries BreadTalk and Toast Box. Guests will also be able to experience a variety of waterfront dining options in the Lakeshore district such as California-style Japanese restaurant Hatsune, while enjoying views of both the lake and the Enchanted Storybook Castle to the north and the Shanghai Disneyland Hotel to the south.

Guests who visit retail shops at Disneytown will find exciting and exclusive Disney merchandise and a wide range of other options, including the popular fashion store i.t, premium trendy fashion apparel for young adults and kids at BAPE STORE®, and luxury jewelry retailer Chow Tai Fook. The area will also feature many other new experiential entries to the mainland China market, including the first flagship retail store operated by the LEGO Group in Asia to provide an integrated and diverse shopping experience with resort-exclusive offerings.

Shanghai Disney Resort is continuously striving to identify globally–known international and Chinese brands to enrich the guest experience in Disneytown. It will be a place where guests can relax and reconnect with family and friends with amazing new experiences waiting around every corner. With something for everyone, this festive venue will be a “must-visit” for anyone living in or traveling to Shanghai.

Shanghai Disney Resort Unveils More Details of Themed Hotels

Disney Magic Extends from Shanghai Disneyland to Two Imaginatively Designed Hôtels

Two hotels with imaginative Disney themes will invite guests to extend their visit to Shanghai Disneyland, creating a multi-day experience and providing even more fun and enchantment for friends and family who are discovering Shanghai Disney Resort. The highly anticipated resort is scheduled to open in spring, 2016, with the first Disney park in Mainland China, a Disneytown shopping, dining and entertainment district, plus the two hotels.

The Shanghai Disneyland Hotel and Toy Story Hotel, conveniently located next to Shanghai Disneyland, keep the Disney magic alive from day into night. With themed designs rich in Disney storytelling and warm, welcoming service, the two hotels offer 420 and 800 guestrooms, respectively, with a range of entertainment, dining, shopping and other recreation options, providing “only at Disney” experiences with Chinese culture in mind.

As the signature hotel of Shanghai Disney Resort, Shanghai Disneyland Hotel is an elegant Art Nouveau-inspired hotel with a touch of Disney magic and imagination. Graphics, decorations, walls and window coverings, and even the furniture are accented with an overlay of Disney wonder. Offering a more playful experience, Toy Story Hotel transports guests into a toy-filled world inspired by the Disney•Pixar series of Toy Story animated films. Whichever hotel they choose, guests will be immersed in Disney stories and create lasting memories with beloved family and friends.

Disney storytelling begins the moment a guest arrives at the hotels. Seasonal gifts and magical moments are elaborately prepared to give guests a warm welcome. Whether they are passing the vivid bronze statues of Mickey and Minnie Mouse at the porte cochere of Shanghai Disneyland Hotel, or crossing the Woody and Buzz Lightyear Courtyards of Toy Story Hotel, guests will enjoy their Disney journey at the expansive properties. At the Shanghai Disneyland Hotel, they also will find Disney characters from such Disney animated classics as The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella and The Lion King.

Delicious, Disney-themed items are on the menu at both Shanghai Disney Resort hotels. At Shanghai Disneyland Hotel, guests may dine with Disney Characters at the buffet-style Lumiere’s Kitchen, or enjoy a fine dining experience with breathtaking views of Shanghai Disney Resort at the Aurora Restaurant. At Sunnyside Café in the Toy Story Hotel, guests will enjoy tasty meals and also discover Chinese-style kites, featuring Toy Story characters, flying above them. The kites are inspired by traditional kite craftsmanship from Weifang in Shandong Province, the famous kite city in China.

Disney storytelling continues at various themed hotel facilities, such as Mickey Mouse Playhouse, Hakuna Matata Oasis and King Triton Pool. Guests are totally steeped in the world of Disney with character-themed room keys, bath amenities, post cards, pens and more. The hotel gift shops offer an array of selected Disney merchandise, which guests can treasure as part of the unforgettable memories of their visit.

In line with the world-class standards of all Disney hotels, the Shanghai Disney Resort hotels also show great consideration for every guest with premier hospitality, cordial services and meticulous attention to detail. Benefitting from the proximity to Shanghai Disneyland and the Wishing Star Lake, both hotels offer special logistical services to assist guests, including merchandise package pickup, luggage service, the Disney Resort Shuttle and Disney Resort Ferry.

•Merchandise package pickup: Merchandise purchased in the theme park can be delivered right to a guest’s hotel, at no extra charge.

•Luggage service:  Guests may drop off luggage at the main entrance of the theme park or at the hotels, to be held for their arrival.

•Disney Resort Shuttle: Complimentary shuttle service is available between Toy Story Hotel and Shanghai Disneyland.

•Disney Resort Ferry: Complimentary water taxi service is available between Shanghai Disneyland Hotel and Shanghai Disneyland.

After enjoying some time at Shanghai Disney Resort, or while resting in between meals, parents may bring their children to the Family Activity Centers, located at each hotel and filled with educationally inspired activities, crafts, games and story readings, all within a unique Disney and Disney•Pixar experience. With hospitality that only Disney can provide, guests will be entertained throughout their stay.

Both hotels blend the unique joy of Disney with Chinese cultural heritage to satisfy the needs of Chinese guests. One of the special Chinese features at Shanghai Disneyland Hotel will be a fountain with a large, unique centerpiece — a glass peony blossom with classic Disney fairies. The peony is a traditional flower of China, and this piece, produced in Shanghai, will be one of the largest sculpted, solid glass flowers in all of China. Special touches also include amenities that cater to Asian customs, such as slippers and high-quality tea bags.

Beyond any imagination, Shanghai Disneyland Hotel and Toy Story Hotel welcome people from all over the world to experience the best of Disney in China, all day and all night. A stay at the themed hotels creates an integrated, exciting and holistic tour of Shanghai Disney Resort. Fun moments continue to surprise and delight throughout the guest visit.

Disney scout scours China for performing talent

WALT Disney was always hailed as one of the world’s great showmen, so it stands to reason that performances play a significant role in a Disneyland experience.

Good shows require good performers. The job of talent scout for Shanghai Disney Resort falls to Canadian Dave Bennett — a former Broadway talent agent and now casting director at Shanghai Disney Resort — and his local team members including auditions manager Rebecca Yao.

Starting from last October, they’ve toured around China on talent searches.

“We publicized our audition process through online social platforms such as Weibo and WeChat,” said Bennett. “The results were very rewarding. If those wishing to apply missed us in one city, they could go to another city on our itinerary. The enthusiasm was such that we actually had a number of people flying around the country for multiple auditions.”

Auditions didn’t suffer embarrassment from a language barrier. Shows at Disney Shanghai will be performed in Chinese as well as English, and the musical “The Lion King” will be premiered in Mandarin for the first time.

“We knew some of the auditioners were nervous,” said Bennett. “They viewed the auditions like a critical exam where they were afraid of giving the wrong answer. But, in fact, there were no right or wrong answers. The best auditioners were those who just managed to be themselves.”

Casting criteria isn’t bound by profession, experience or educational background. Bennett said the emphasis is on performance skills and the ability to project personality.

“We can judge that from movements and expressions,” Yao said. “We can see whether someone is truly enjoying what they’re doing. We encouraged them to give us their best.”

Applicants were asked to shows skills in areas such as singing, dancing or acting. In the end, Bennett and Yao had to fit roles to the talent they discovered.

“For example, if we find a dancer who might be good at acting, we would ask that applicant to read a script,” Bennett said.

The casting team also has sought talent from dancing and acting schools in China.

“Take Chinese dancers, for example,” said Yao. “They are professional dancers, but they may not have learned other types of dances. Our auditions are structured to show them what we need and see if they can adapt.”

Stage auditions are not common in China, Bennett said. Nervousness about the experience was expected.

“We tried our best to make our applicants feel relaxed during the auditions,” he said. “So they could express themselves freely.”

Experience at Shanghai Disney can help aspiring Chinese actors, actresses, singers and dancers build their careers. Sometimes, performers leave that Disney segment and go into other functions, such as marketing. Disney offers wide career opportunities.

Yao cited herself as an example.

“I joined the company when Hong Kong Disneyland opened in 2005,” she said. “I have worked at five different jobs within the company, and each transfer was supported by the company.”

Bennett said this was his first project for Disney. He calls it an amazing experience.

“We believe that both guests and our performers will experience the magic of the resort,” said Yao. “It really makes me feel good seeing guests and performers enjoying themselves.”

What is your biggest achievement working with Disney?

Yao: Just being associated with this company. After I first visited Disney World, I knew it was my dream place to work.

Bennett: I have an elder sister who wanted me to do arts and an elder brother who wanted me to be engaged in business. Somehow, I found something in between the two. Being included in a company like Disney is my biggest achievement.

What Disney Parks have you visited?

Yao: I went to Disney World in Orlando when I was around 10 years old. The experience was so impressive and I dreamed about working for Disney from that moment on.

Bennett: We drove 24 hours to go to Walt Disney World after it opened. I was a child, and I still remember how excited my family and I were. Since then, I’ve been to several parks, but that one is still my favorite.

What do you think makes Disney special in the industry?

Bennett: It’s a company of positive spirits. The working environment is great. Everybody who works there is happy, and the company shares its happiness with other people through volunteer activities, the parks themselves, the theatrical productions and huge Broadway productions. Everything is creative and fun.

Yao: The company creates magic not only for guests, but also for employees. It gives employees the opportunity to create career paths that can change their lives.

Shanghai Disney Resort Creates Disney Reading Corner for Young Readers

Resort’s Community Programs Continue to Ensure Local Children a Fun and Safe Summer Season

With the start of the summer season, Shanghai Disney Resort has created a unique Disney Reading Corner in Shanghai Pudong Library, one of the largest libraries in China. In partnership with the Shanghai Pudong Library, the resort’s VoluntEARS, consisting of creative talents from Walt Disney Imagineering Shanghai, redesigned the library’s children’s floor with colorful Disney elements to create a safe, fun and comfortable reading environment for families. The resort also donated over 500 Disney story books for the reading corner to inspire young readers and spread the joy of reading.

As part of Shanghai Disney Resort Community Beautification Program, many Disney VoluntEARS from the Shanghai Disney Resort management and project development teams participated in the decoration of the Disney Reading Corner. The resort’s VoluntEARS also brought Disney happiness to over 30 students from Shanghai Pudong Special Needs School and worked hand-in-hand with them on coloring castle pieces, which have been assembled and placed permanently on Pudong Library’s children’s floor.

Shanghai Disney Resort has a long-standing cooperation with Shanghai Pudong Library. The resort’s VoluntEARS have hosted regular Disney Reading Together and Disney Movie Experience initiatives at the library since 2013, encouraging young parents to spend quality time with their children and enjoy the magic created by Disney.

Shanghai Disney Resort is also working with local authorities to increase awareness and emphasize the importance of water safety among young children in the local community, ensuring them a safer summer season. The resort, in partnership with the Youth Protection Department of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, introduced the “Disney Wild About Safety – Safety Smart® In the Water!” program to 17 schools in Shanghai this June. A total of over 2,000 students watched the animated educational short film, “Safety Smart® In the Water!” and engaged in interactive water safety exercises with Shanghai Disney Resort VoluntEARS.
