JUST ANNOUNCED: Disney twenty-three Journeys to Pandora, Going Behind the Scenes of the Next-Level Storytelling of Avatar: The Way of Water
NOVEMBER 3, 2022

In 2009, James Cameron’s Avatar transported audiences to a completely new world, exploring a dazzling landscape of colorful characters and unique species, while touching the hearts of millions. The Winter issue of Disney twenty-three takes readers back to Pandora for a new set of adventures that await fans in Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water. The much-anticipated sequel to the highest-grossing movie of all time opens in theaters December 16, and Disney twenty-three goes behind the scenes on the next chapter in this groundbreaking story with stars Sam Worthington (Jake), Zoe Saldaña (Neytiri), and Sigourney Weaver (Kiri), as well as producer Jon Landau. “At its core, Avatar: The Way of Water is about family, about survival, about our Na’vi and human family, and about the greater family with our fellow creatures and our flora and fauna,” says Weaver.

D23 Expo 2022 gave fans a first look at Disney 100 Years of Wonder. The new issue explores some of the highlights of the celebration—including new theme park spectaculars, incredible films, and an immersive touring exhibition from the Walt Disney Archives.

Ever since Giselle (Amy Adams) and Robert (Patrick Dempsey) got their “happily ever after” in 2007’s Enchanted, fans have been dreaming about what happens next. On November 18, Disney+ is granting that wish with the new film Disenchanted. Stars Maya Rudolph, Gabriella Baldacchino, James Marsden, and Disney Legend Idina Menzel, along with director Adam Shankman, reveal the true meaning of “happily ever after” and what’s in store for this fairytale family after Giselle and Robert share true love’s kiss. Plus, Warwick Davis talks about bringing back his iconic character Willow Ufgood, who is tasked once more with saving the world in Lucasfilm’s Willow, an Original series coming November 30 to Disney+.

Disney Legend Tim Allen revisits key moments from his acting career, including what it was like to reprise his classic role as the “man in the red suit” in the upcoming Disney+ Original series The Santa Clauses, recounting favorite memories from sleigh bells and toolbelts to infinity and beyond. And stars of the upcoming Disney+ Original series National Treasure: Edge of History share their own book of secrets about what’s in store for this next generation of treasure hunters.

The new issue, available exclusively to Gold Members of D23: The Official Disney Fan Club, also takes a boat ride down memory lane with Disney Park historians to commemorate 25 years of “it’s a small world” Holiday. As a special bonus, each issue of the publication will include a set of holiday-themed gift tags as part of D23 Season of Magic presented by Target.

Entertainment Weekly a écrit:

From Sigourney Weaver's new role to the new clan of ocean-dwelling Na'vi, Cameron spills some background on the action.

James Cameron made movie history in 2009 with Avatar, the highest-grossing film of all time. Thirteen years later, audiences will get the sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water — the first of four on the way.

The director trades Pandora's rainforests for an ocean setting. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), the former Marine who melded his mind into the body of a Na'vi, the moon's blue-skinned indigenous species, has now built a life with wife Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), complete with their own brood of children. But the RDA (Resources Development Administration), the militarized organization that engaged in a war with the Na'vi of Pandora in the first film, is still a threat all these years later. (Yes, Stephen Lang is back as Col. Quaritch, only he, too, is now in a more formidable Na'vi body.)

Cameron sees the upcoming sequels as "one big contiguous saga when you see it all, but each film has its own off-ramp and finale that rounds it all out," he tells EW. "The best metaphor is really good episodic TV. The key to The Way of Water is to get you on the side of the characters so you actually care about what happens next in their journey."

The filmmaker sat down with EW to break down four key sequences in the upcoming film, in theaters this Dec. 16.

The life aquatic

"Here we see, essentially, fish-out-of-water characters," says Cameron, "or as we like to call it in the writing room, the 'unfish in water.' Kiri is one of the unfish-in-water characters."

Sigourney Weaver, in a brand-new role after appearing as Dr. Grace Augustine in Avatar, plays Kiri, Jake and Neytiri's adopted 15-year-old daughter, seen here taking her first swim in the Pandoran waters. The origins of Kiri are complicated: She's is a naturally conceived Na'vi raised in the rainforest. "It's just that she's born of Grace's avatar," Cameron explains. "It's a natural birth, but the avatar is brain-dead, but she's not. She's normal."

Kiri is "going through some emotional stuff" by the time she's seen swimming underwater, Cameron points out. It's a scene in which all the kids in the Sully family — including Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), Lo'ak (Britain Dalton), Tuk (Trinity Bliss), and the adopted human child Spider (Jack Champion) — jump in the ocean for the first time and experience the wonder. For Kiri, "she goes from this anxious and depressed state to one that's joyful and reconnected over the course of a three-minute scene," Cameron says

Kiri's joy is enhanced from this moment, more so than her siblings. "She's a character who's a true sensitive," Cameron adds. "She's a person who's very connected to the world around them, far beyond a normal Na'vi — to the animals, to the plants, and to the rhythm and balance of life. When she jumps into the ocean, she has this transformative experience."

Flight of imagination

What pushes Jake's family out of their rainforest toward the ocean? "A bunch of bad s---," Cameron says. It begins with the Na'vi parents flying over the floating islands on the backs of banshees, along with their eldest son, Neteyam. A concerned call from one of their other children sends them back — and, from there, "the story's on," says the director.

Now 15 years older, Jake and Neytiri have a different view on life. "Becoming a parent changes so much of your behavior and your value system," Cameron says. "What we saw in the first film were people who were fearless. Jake would throw himself off his ikran onto a leonopteryx" — remember those Avatar creatures? — "but is a father of four going do that? I'm thinking probably not, because they have a duty to survive. It doesn't mean he's a coward, but it means his priorities change."

Cameron adds that Jake is waging guerilla warfare against the RDA as he grapples with fatherhood and past as a warrior. "He's trying to keep his kids alive and trying to adjust his own life," the director says. "Is he still a warrior? Are these young boys who are 14, 15, 16, coming up, getting all excited about wanting to go to war and fight for their people and for their land? How's [Jake] going to be a hypocrite and hold them back when he has to go do it?"

Cameron may be speaking from personal experience, especially more recently with his younger children with wife Suzy Amis. "I've seen the teen years and I've lived through them and it can be no fun at all," he remarks. "A lot of anxiety, a lot of quest for identity, a lot of trying to be heard and seen."

A new tribe

With the ocean comes the Metkayina, a clan of Na'vi who dwell in shallow waters. Unlike the Omaticaya clan, whose Na'vi thrive on land, those in the Metkayina have biologically adapted to aquatic life. They are marked by tails and fin-like "strakes" that help them propel through the water.

Cameron didn't want to take the webbed-feet approach, like just about every other film since 1954's Creature From the Black Lagoon. What the crew created instead was something for the actors, performing in tanks of water with motion-capture equipment, to emulate these strake appendages.

"We essentially gave them jet packs, and they were able to trigger the jet packs themselves on the fly," Cameron reveals. "So they'd complete a stroke, and when they're in the glide phase of the stroke, they'd trigger the jet pack with a little tiny switch and it would push them forward a couple of meters. They'd move their hips like they had a tail. We called it the crocodile swim."

Ronal (Kate Winslet) and Tonowari (Cliff Curtis) lead these Na'vi in the Metkayina as chieftans. A pregnant Ronal is seen in the background of this scene as Tonowari explains something important about the culture of the Metkayina and tulkun. (More on the latter shortly). Their specific tattoos, inspired by Polynesian and Melanesian cultures, signify their authority.

"She's the 'Tsahìk' — the spiritual leader, the shaman, the keeper of wisdom," Cameron says. "The male leader, who's called the 'Olo'eyktan,' handles the day-to-day, which is hunting, weaving, any kind of fabrication work. He's like the secular leader and she's the spiritual leader. For major decisions, if it doesn't clearly fall into one camp or the other but it affects everybody, they need each other's agreement. So even though you see Tonowari as this big, strong, alpha male-type leader, he doesn't make a move without [Ronal's] wisdom."

The film suggests Jake has met Tonowari before when Na'vi clan leaders got together sometime in the past to discuss the RDA's ravaging of Pandora. "[Jake] knows him," Cameron confirms, "but he's never spent time at Tonowari's village before. So there's a tension between these two guys. They respect each other, but Jake is asking for something that's quite dangerous for Tonowari."

Slash of the titans

The first image sees Kiri swimming underwater among all the various forms of sea life. Cameron estimates "there are probably 10 or 20 times" of what we see here when it comes to total creatures designed for the film.

Among the new begins introduced in The Way of Water are the tulkun, which appear similar to the whales of earth. "We treat the tulkun as characters," says Cameron. "They are slightly transcendent animals that have some degree of consciousness and culture. They're intelligent, highly cultured, highly linguistic. They interact with the ocean Na'vi as equals." The tulkun also share the same religion as the Metkayina.

Typically, tulkun have large petrel wings like a humpback whale, as well as a cephalic fin (an end fin). This tulkun, however, has seen better days: Two-thirds of its cephalic fin has been blown off, which speaks to the film's wider warfare. "You're actually seeing a damaged, scarred tulkun," Cameron says. "You see the scar down across his eye and the scar tissue at the end of the fin where it was amputated. There's a lot going on in that image."

The Walt Disney Company a écrit:

Disney and Avatar Launch “Keep Our Oceans Amazing” Ahead of 20th Century Studios’ ‘Avatar: The Way of Water‘
Today, in celebration of the theatrical release of the 20th Century Studios film Avatar: The Way of Water on December 16, 2022, Disney and Avatar are launching a global “Keep Our Oceans Amazing” campaign to raise awareness of the challenges facing oceans and marine life. The campaign will support The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and its work to protect 10 of our oceans’ amazing animals and their habitats, connected to the beauty of Pandora. As part of the campaign, fans are invited to participate in celebratory experiences and products.

One of the experiences, called the Virtual Pandoran Ocean, transports fans to the wonders of the reef. Through this unique digital activation, fans can help Disney and Avatar “Keep Our Oceans Amazing” now through December 31, 2022, by creating their very own Avatar-inspired ocean creature at Avatar.com/KeepOurOceansAmazing. For every creature created in the Virtual Pandoran Ocean, Disney will give $5 to TNC, up to $1 million, to help the organization achieve its goal of protecting 10% of the ocean by 2030.

“The entire planet depends on the health of our ocean to support and sustain it. The ocean produces half the air we breathe, provides livelihoods for billions of people, and is home to more than half of all life on earth,” said Melissa Garvey, Global Director of Ocean Protection at The Nature Conservancy. “We need to do our part to protect it. That’s why we are thrilled to collaborate with Disney and Avatar on this campaign. Our mission is driven by working together with those who believe we can shape a brighter future where people and nature can thrive together. The film’s important message complements our work, and we look forward to working together to protect the 10 species highlighted in this campaign and creating a healthier ocean for all.”

In Avatar: The Way of Water, audiences will be introduced to a new oceanic Na’vi clan and an array of diverse aquatic creatures, inspiring audiences to connect with the beauty of our oceans right here on Earth. Oceans cover 70% of the planet, shelter an incredible diversity of life, and provide us with food, jobs, and more than half of the oxygen we breathe. Unfortunately, less than 8% of this unique ecosystem is protected. “Keep Our Oceans Amazing” aims to extend Disney’s longstanding conservation legacy to help protect 10 amazing ocean animals and their habitats. This new initiative will support TNC to protect beluga whales, blue whales, whale sharks, hawksbill sea turtles, manatees, manta rays, parrotfish, staghorn coral, sea lions, and mangroves—coastal habitats that provide important shelter for many marine species. The specific ocean species that have been selected can be found in waters throughout the world and many of them share qualities with the Pandoran creatures and habitats featured throughout the film. Each animal and plant species is also classified as threatened, vulnerable, or endangered. TNC is working alongside indigenous peoples and local communities to develop multi-faceted solutions to the challenges these species face across the globe, to ensure that both people and wildlife thrive.

Disney has a long history of taking action for oceans and supporting the protection of marine life—from our 2030 environmental goals that include efforts to minimize greenhouse gas emissions, source sustainable seafood, and invest in the protection of our watersheds, to our funding and expertise for biodiversity protection through Disney Conservation. To date, the Disney Conservation Fund has directed more than $120 million to support nonprofit organizations working around the world to save wildlife, inspire action, and protect the planet. Nearly $20 million of those funds have been provided to programs that benefit marine life, communities, and the oceans we all depend on. This initiative is part of Disney Planet Possible, tangible actions Disney is taking to help create a healthier home for people and wildlife.

“Disney has a rich legacy of conservation and inspiring action to protect nature,” said Jennifer Cohen, executive vice president, Corporate Social Responsibility for The Walt Disney Company. “We’re proud to celebrate the release of Avatar: The Way of Water by raising global awareness of the critical importance of protecting oceans and marine biodiversity.”

“The Avatar ethos is that we are all connected to each other and our planet, and therefore are responsible for positively impacting the people and world around us,” said Avatar: The Way of Water producer Jon Landau. “The ‘Keep Our Oceans Amazing’ campaign is a way for us to invite fans from around the world to join us in creating that impact.”

Global audiences were first introduced to the world of Pandora in the original Avatar and fell in love with the characters, the story, and the beautiful rainforests and creatures, which led to it becoming the highest-grossing film of all time. As we journey into Avatar: The Way of Water, audiences will be transported to an all-new biome—the reef—and will be introduced to a new oceanic clan and an array of diverse aquatic creatures. This expanding universe underlines just how intentionally Pandora has been designed to be a metaphor for Earth. Audiences will experience the beauty of the sea and the richness of biodiversity in Pandora’s oceans.

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure. The film will feature awe-inspiring scenes that showcase the vibrant bioluminescence and beauty of Pandora’s aquatic landscape— scenes that will inspire us all to consider the wonders of our own oceanic world.

The Hollywood Reporter a écrit:

The news is a coup for James Cameron's long-awaited sequel.

James Cameron’s long-awaited sequel Avatar: The Way of Water has landed a coveted release at the China box office, Disney and 20th Century confirmed late Tuesday.

The movie will open in the Middle Kingdom on Dec. 16, the same day it hits North American theaters.

The Way of Water is one of the few Hollywood tentpoles to land a berth in China since the pandemic began.

Cameron’s sequel sails into theaters around the globe 13 years after Avatar made history in 2009, becoming the top-grossing film of all time at the global box office, a crown it still wears today with more than $2.92 billion in ticket sales, not adjusted for inflation and including rereleases.

Avatar has been a big hit over the years in China, where it has earned a hefty $261.8 million to date (it has been released there several times).

The Way of Water‘s footprint in China will include Imax theaters, a go-to exhibitor for Avatar fans.

Sources say talks to book the movie in China have been in the works for weeks, but the official announcement came two days after the stunning disclosure that Bob Iger will return to run the Walt Disney Co. as CEO, resulting in the ouster of Bob Chapek.

Disney inherited the Avatar franchise after Iger engineered a deal to acquire much of Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox, including the movie studio 20th Century Fox.

The Way of Water‘s production budget is one of the priciest in Hollywood’s history, and is in the $350 million to $400 million range, according to sources.

Erik Davis a écrit:
Happy to say #AvatarTheWayOfWater is phenomenal! Bigger, better & more emotional than #Avatar, the film is visually breathtaking, visceral & incredibly engrossing. The story, the spectacle, the spirituality, the beauty - this is moviemaking & storytelling at its absolute finest.

Brandon Davis a écrit:
Avatar: The Way of Water is a never-ending visual spectacle.

It’s a better, more complex story than the first with solid emotion but the characters could grow a bit more. It’s definitely long, running on incredible visuals & techniques which are 3D’s best.

#AvatarTheWayOfWater

Perri Nemiroff a écrit:
#AvatarTheWayOfWater is pretty incredible. I had faith James Cameron would raise the bar w/ the effects but these visuals are mind-blowing. One stunning frame after the next. But the thing I dug most is how the technical feats always feel in service of character & world-building.

Courtney Howard a écrit:
James Cameron & Co. deliver yet another riveting, awe-inducing masterclass in world-building with #AvatarTheWayOfWater . Immersive, emotionally engaging & epically entertaining, it’s a thrilling ride. CG artifice melts away where we’re just watching the characters’ humanity steer

Josh Horowitz a écrit:
James Cameron once again shows filmmakers how it’s done. I’ve said it a thousand times. Never doubt him. AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER is how you do epic blockbuster-ing. Emotional, visceral, and as big as movies get

Drew Taylor a écrit:
Have now seen #Avatar twice and am overwhelmed by both its technical mastery and unexpectedly intimate emotional scope. Yes the world is expanded and sequels teased but the characters are most important. Cameron is in top form, especially in final act. Good to have him back.

Kevin McCarthy a écrit:
James Cameron's #AvatarTheWayOfWater is a monumental filmmaking achievement striking a great balance between technical & emotional. The 48fps 3D experience features some of the most jaw-dropping immersion I’ve ever seen. Felt like a kid again watching T2 for 1st time. Astounding.

Ian Sandwell a écrit:
Unsurprisingly, #AvatarTheWayOfWater is a visual masterpiece with rich use of 3D and breathtaking vistas. It does suffer from a thin story and too many characters to juggle, yet James Cameron pulls it together for an extraordinary final act full of emotion and thrilling action.

Tom Page a écrit:
#AvatarTheWayOfWater is “more is more” writ large. It’s more beautiful, more in awe of Pandora; more vocal in its environmentalism, more damning of humans. It’s an adrenaline shot to 3D filmmaking and an uncompromising doubling down. You’d expect nothing less from Cameron.

Jake Hamilton a écrit:
As someone who LIKED -- but didn't LOVE -- the first AVATAR, let me tell you:

AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER blew me away.

Vastly superior in visuals, story telling and performances, the sequel left my jaw on the ground for the entire runtime.

James Cameron is the GOD of sequels.
