[Disney California Adventure] Le show nocturne World of Color (11 juin 2010)

Ce 27 juin, pour la première fois, le WOC a été annulé!
Un tuyau a rompu à Paradise Pier entrainant une importante fuite d'eau. Sur ce, le spectacle de 10h15 a été annulé. Beaucoup de guest sont très déçus et en colères : plusieurs dizaines de minutes d'attente le matin pour atteindre les précieux Pass, show le plus attendu, certans avaient même réservé le dîner spécial WOC incluant une excellente place pour le show...
Bref, les CM ont du gérer une foule mécontente et ont fait face pour la première fois à ce genre de situation, ce qui n'a pas été une mince à faire...

Voilà ce que j'ai compris mais mon anglais est loin d'être parfait !

Bienvenue dans le petit monde des parcs d'attractions Il fallait bien que ça arrive un jour.

Depuis quelques temps, à chaques fois qu'un nouveau truc ouvre, il y a une panne :
- Attractions à Universal Studios Singapore
- Forbidden Journy à IOA
- WOC à DCA

Allez une futur panne pour RC Racer

Des attractions et des spectacles utilisant des éléments mécaniques qui tombent en panne, c'est vrai que c'est totalement ahurissant

Le cas des pannes sur WOC risque d'être problématique pour Diney en raison notamment des dîners à prix exhorbitants qui permettent d'aoir une place réservée à l'avance; En cas d'annulation u show, les gens peuvent-ils se faire rembourser ? Car, d'un côté, ils n'ont pas eu le show, mais de l'autre ils ont eu leur repas... Curieux de connaître la réponse de Disney

Comme l'a dit Mr.Freddy, le problème est que le show est lié à différentes formules notemment les repas... Je suis également impatient de connaître la réponse de Disney... Le plus logique serait que le guest ait soit le droit d'annuler soit de conserver sa réservation mais avec une ristourne... Mais, financièrement, cette solution n'est pas très rentable pour Mickey.

Certaines personnes essayent de recréer le show sur le Jeux RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, le résultat est magnifique

il doit y avoir une close ecrite quelque part, avec la notification que le spectacle peut etre retardé, annulé, modifié sans préavi notament a cause des conditions climatiques ou problèmes techniques, faut pas oublié que le certaine conditions climatique feront aussi annuler les shows sans dedomagement.

On est d'accord, ils sont certainement protégés juridiquement, mais bon, le mec qui a payé 40 $ par personne pour un resto dégueu (de ce que j'ai pu liore) pour ne même pas assister au show, je crois que son repas doit vraiment lui rester en travers de la gorge...

Le Country Wine Trattoria? Bizarre de ce que j'en ai lu, ça semblait beaucoup plaire (le resto + la nourriture). Moi ce package me donne très envie, surtout pour un prix que je trouve correct!

World of Off-Color
In our last few updates we’ve been telling you all about the logistical hurdles the DCA team has been jumping over to try and pull off the first truly successful night spectacular in DCA’s history. The reviews for World of Color’s artistic merits from tourists and locals alike have been consistently stellar, and the show is certainly leaving the vast majority of the nightly audiences walking away very impressed, particularly with the show’s hugely epic scale and cutting edge technology. On the other hand, the logistics of only allowing 4,000 Fastpass ticket holders into the Paradise Park viewing area is infuriating the Annual Passholders who have grown accustomed to swooping in to DCA after work and having the park practically all to themselves.
The first few weeks of World of Color have seen a steady stream of complaints emailed and phoned in to the Resort’s Guest Communications office about the World of Color Fastpass concept, and thus formally tracked and sent on to executives. (Don’t forget, thanks to a decree from Disney’s legal department last year, any compliment or complaint given verbally at the Guest Relations counter is not tracked anywhere and ceases to exist for tracking purposes once you walk out of that customer service office.) Nearly all of those written complaints that do make it on to the reports are from Annual Passholders, and their basic beef is that they have to get to the park early to get a Fastpass and thus a spot in the viewing area.
While the need to be at DCA in the morning to get your Fastpass certainly does no favors to the average Annual Passholder, and purposely favors the big-spending folks staying on property in a Disney hotel, it wasn’t supposed to be as lopsided as it was when the show opened. You must remember that until just a few months ago the Paradise Park viewing area was thought to hold 9,000 viewers using an old crowd measurement equation that Disney’s industrial engineers had created decades ago. The original numbers for Paradise Park were supposed to break down roughly as follows; 5,000 Fastpass viewers, 2,000 dining package viewers, and 2,000 Standby viewers backfilled into most viewing areas on a first come, first serve basis.
But by March it was discovered that there was no way 9,000 modern sized Americans with all of their strollers and baggage and electric scooters could fit in that area, and after a few crowd tests using cubicle-dwellers from TDA as guinea pigs, the 4,000 figure was landed on and World of Color quickly morphed into a hard-ticketed event that requires either an early arrival or the purchase of a dining package. Many of the AP’s are still fuming about it, although TDA has no current plans to change anything about the setup. In fact, TDA just approved the earlier opening of the private DCA entry from the Grand Californian Hotel, to give those hotels guests an additional 30 minutes each morning to start grabbing up all the free Fastpasses before the non-hotel guests are let in for the day.
However, the biggest flaw in this Fastpass strategy didn’t rear its ugly head until Sunday, June 27th when the second show of the night had to be suddenly cancelled. This was the first, and so far the only cancellation since World of Color opened on June 11th. That’s a remarkably solid record right from the start, and it speaks to the reliability of the show platform’s engineering and the long hours of talented programming and planning that Steve Davison’s team put into the massive show.
The cancellation on June 27th ironically wasn’t even related to the show infrastructure in the lagoon itself. Rather, it was a sudden leak in the plumbing for the hidden fountains built into the Paradise Park terraced gardens. The well-meaning DCA Custodial team swooped in and began sweeping hundreds of gallons of water towards the drains in the interactive fountain, not realizing that the fountain is a self-contained system with a reservoir underneath it instead of a storm drain. After an hour of sweeping all that gushing water towards the fountain the reservoir finally filled up and there was nowhere else for the water to go, and as water began rushing down stairwells and emergency access lanes the frantic theme park managers had to cancel the second show suddenly. With 4,000 Fastpasses already distributed for the 11:15PM show, the crowd control CM’s were told to clear out Paradise Park while the water was turned off to the entire area in an attempt to salvage the last show of the night.
That sent a rush of furious Fastpass holders to the Guest Relations offices in both Disneyland and DCA, where they were met with a combination of confusion and indifference from the Guest Relations staff. It wasn’t entirely the fault of those front-line folks however, as their managers had received vague direction from the DCA executives that in the case of a show cancellation no refunds or return tickets were to be distributed. The dining package folks were the most upset, but the cancellation guidelines handed down from Disney’s legal department was that they had only purchased a meal and the World of Color Fastpass was an extra bonus. If they’d already eaten the meal, then no refund was due.
In the real world, however, those 2,000 dining packages being sold per day aren’t popular because of the cuisine, they are popular because of the primo viewing spot in Paradise Park the diner gets afterward. There was also quite a discrepancy that night between the two parks on what was eventually being given out at Guest Relations, with the Disneyland team in City Hall being very tightfisted and the DCA team in their front office relenting after a bit and handing out hundreds of refunds or return park tickets to those who complained the loudest.
What this boils down to obviously is a customer service issue. And on that night the customer service on display in DCA for thousands of people at the second showing of World of Color was miserable. The whole thing relates back to an almost unspoken truth about 21st century Disney theme parks, and that is that when real problems arise the customer service at Disney theme parks often isn’t very good, and can sometimes be downright horrible.
Disney managers and PR spokesmen always talk a good game, with mandatory use of cliché phrases like “magical experience” and “world class guest service”. But the reality in the parks is that if something goes seriously wrong the front-line CM’s and their immediate managers put up a quick Us vs. Them mentality and only do the bare minimum required to get the complaining person to go away. Or worse, they hide behind the fine print and arcane legal concepts, such as the ridiculous assertion that most dining package customers consider their World of Color Fastpass as merely an extra little bonus, like a pretty flower in a bud vase on the table instead of the main reason they purchased the meal.
This change in service didn’t happen overnight in the parks, as it’s been a slow degrading of standards and service levels over the past decade. And we’ve told you in the past how the once vaunted Disney University training programs that used to instill a jump-through-hoops service culture with every new hire have been reduced to boring PowerPoint shows explaining sexual harassment policies and the proper way to pick up heavy boxes, while the soft skills of customer service go nearly unmentioned during the precious few hours a new Cast Member receives when they start their theme park job. The night of the 27th was a perfect example of how Disney’s current theme park service culture can take a disappointing and frustrating situation beyond anyone’s control and turn it into a total nightmare as paying customers are forced to fight tooth and nail for a reasonable service solution from a multi-Billion dollar company.
The leaky plumbing in Paradise Park was fixed by the next day, and the World of Color infrastructure is proving to be extremely reliable after nearly a month of 3 full shows per night. But the Santa Ana winds will be coming this fall, with perhaps more cancellations hours after people have finished their Trattoria dinner package or spent 12 hours holding their Fastpass ticket. It took over a decade for Disney theme parks to cheapen their training and weaken their service standards to the current mediocre levels, and there’s no big culture change coming anytime soon from the executive ranks. But let’s just hope Mary Niven as DCA’s Vice President can send out a memo on how to handle huge crowds of angry customers when the next show cancellation inevitably occurs.

Oui, ça c'est pas de bol. En même temps, ils n'en peuvent vraiment rien. Mais à mon avis, ils vont pouvoir rembourser quelques repas combinés avec le show !

Sinon, j'espère que si ce show voit le jour aux WDS (on peut rêver), ce soit dans un amphithéâtre spécifique (comme Fantasmic en Floride), à la fois pour la qualité de vision, mais aussi parce que ça devrait (je peux me tromper?) éviter de devoir faire une plate-forme amovible qui doit être cachée en journée. ça enlèverait déjà une partie des problèmes techniques et ça diminuerait à la fois le coût de l'attraction et les coûts de maintenance...

oué mais en meme temps cette plateforme permet d'avoir un lieu agréable en journée. Si aux WDS on a un jour un plan d'eau de ce type, ça serait bien qu'il ne soit pas exclusivement réservé a un spectacle au fin fond du parc...

Mouais, moi je préférerais quand même avant tout un véritable amphithéâtre de réellement 9000 places assises plutôt que le système en Californie...
Surtout qu'en Europe, avec l'heure à laquelle se couche le soleil en été, il ne serait pas possible de faire 3 shows comme en Californie. Il ne pourrait y en avoir qu'un par soir. Et là, faire un show pareil pour seulement 4.000 personnes par jour, ce serait une hérésie...
Dans ce genre de cas, l'efficacité façon Fantasmic en Floride doit primer !

I’ve heard that the problem isn’t with the fountains and other electrical systems… but rather with the huge stage platform that sits below the surface. Apparently it was already a rather sensitive issue as some problems came up with it during the install, and a temporary fix was found at the time, but now issues with the stage have resurfaced (get it?).

Glow Fest a été sous-traité à une société extérieure à Disney par la présidente de DCA, ce qui a fortement déplu au Département Spectacles du Resort. Mais c'est un immense succès...
Toutefois, Glow Fest ne durera que cet été car le Département spectacles du Resort lui prépare un successeur pour l'automne, qui devrait s'appeler ElecTRONica, en rapport à TRON. Cette nouvelle version de Glow Fest ne durera que jusqu'au 02/01/2011 et ne devrait pas revenir, à cause de l'emprise des travaux de Buena Vista Street qui se déroulleront en 2011 et début 2012.

However, there was a bit of negotiating going on internally at TDA over the decision to say goodbye to the Electrical Parade. Disneyland’s Entertainment Department, a notorious bunch with more than a twinge of show business attitude, was still furious over the outside contractors that DCA Vice President Mary Niven tapped to quickly design and operate Glow Fest this summer season. As regular readers know, Glow Fest turned out to be the sleeper hit of the summer with both the customer survey statistics and the overflowing cash registers at the glowtini bars, and that left Disneyland’s Entertainment Department quietly seething (or loudly complaining, depending on the day of the week). The result is that the Entertainment Department, suddenly missing a major parade and with a bruised ego, has now been allowed to stage an all-new version of Glow Fest beginning this fall.

The new version of this nighttime street party, to be designed and staffed entirely in-house by the Entertainment Department, currently has the working title “ElecTRONica”. The theme will play up the new TRON movie to be released this Christmas, and some of the same folks from the Studios who pulled off some of the TRON marketing stunts at recent ComicCon events down in San Diego have been consulted for the DCA version. Several elements of the popular Glow Fest will be re-used, like the street team dancers, the go-go girls, and the very successful cocktail bars set up in the middle of the street. ElecTRONica will also use the old Millionaire building in the back of the Hollywood section, to house a TRON themed video arcade. Disneyland’s Entertainment Department is working feverishly on this one, as they want to ensure that their version of this street party is more successful than the outside contractor’s version was, if only to convince the TDA executives to never again use an outside group to provide in-park entertainment. (And those divas have been busy online too, making sure everyone knows what they're doing.)

Once the curtain comes down on ElecTRONica on January 2nd, there likely won’t be an opportunity to stage a similar event next summer due to the massive construction the Buena Vista Street project will create throughout 2011.
