Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers (a current Oscar nominee), and Justin K. Thompson have been tapped by Sony Pictures Animation to direct the sequel to the Oscar-winning animated feature “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”
Although Dos Santos’ directing role had been previously reported, the trio have been working together on the project from the start.
Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Christina Steinberg are all returning to produce the project, with Alonzo Ruvalcaba co-producing. “Spider-Verse” director Peter Ramsey will executive produce, along with Aditya Sood.
Lord and Miller are also joining David Callaham (“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”) as credited screenwriters.
“The crew behind the ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ set such a ridiculously high bar, and we’re humbled to take on the challenge of charting the next chapter in the story of Miles Morales,” the directing team said in a joint statement.
Dos Santos and Thompson are both Sony Pictures Animation veterans making their featuring directing debuts with the “Spider-Verse” sequel. Dos Santos’ previous credits include Nickelodeon’s “The Legend of Korra” and “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” DreamWorks Animation’s “Voltron: Legendary Defender,” Warner Bros.’ “Justice League Unlimited” and “Teen Titans.” Thompson’s work as the production designer for the first “Spider-Verse” film won an Annie Award, and he was also the production designer on Sony Animation’s “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” and “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.”
Powers is currently nominated for the Oscar for best adapted screenplay for the civil rights drama “One Night in Miami,” which Powers adapted from his play by the same name. He’s also the co-director of Pixar Animation Studios’ current Oscar nominated feature “Soul,” making Powers the first Black filmmaker to reach director or co-director status at Pixar. “Soul” has already won Producers Guild, Golden Globe, Annie, Critics’ Choice and NAACP Image awards for best animated feature. Powers also wrote on the first season for the CBS All Access series “Star Trek: Discovery.”
The first “Spider-Verse” — directed by Bob Persichetti, Ramsey and Rodney Rothman from a script by Lord and Rothman — was a groundbreaking film in multiple dimensions. It was the first Spider-Man movie to focus on the story of Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), whose parents are Black and Latino, rather than Peter Parker (Jake Johnson). To achieve an aesthetic that evoked a comic book come to life, Sony Animation effectively re-engineered its computer animation systems, and the film’s box office success — earning $373.5 million worldwide — proved that animated films aimed at adult audiences could be major hits. It was Sony’s first movie to win the Oscar for best animated feature, and many consider it to be the best Spider-Man movie ever made.
“We are so lucky to have Joaquim, Justin and Kemp on the ‘Spider-Verse’ team,” Lord and Miller said in a statement. “We are huge fans of Joaquim’s work — he makes his characters so heartfelt and unique, and he can tell an emotional story with an action sequence the way a musical does through a song. Justin is a maverick filmmaker who relentlessly pursues visual innovation and surprise but always in support of the emotional storytelling. Kemp’s work is incisive and ambitious and funny — with a writer’s wisdom and a director’s heart — he just knows what matters in every scene. All three of them elevate every project they take on, and they are certainly raising our game. We honestly just like them and want to be their friends and we’re hoping working on this movie together for the next few years will totally make that happen.”
The sequel to “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” is scheduled to open in theaters on Oct. 7, 2022.

J'ai vraiment hâte de voir ce qu'ils vont nous proposer avec ces nouveaux films. Visuellement ça semble toujours aussi stylisé et créatif que le premier! L'attente va être longue
J'ai eu la chance d'assister à la présentation du film à Annecy et je dois dire que c'était un des meilleurs moments de la semaine, sinon le meilleur ! Moi qui suis surtout passionné par WDAS et Pixar, j'attendais par dessus tout les événements Strange World et Lightyear, pour ne pas dire que c'était même la principale raison de ma présence à Annecy. En fin de compte et à ma grande surprise, je termine la semaine plus enthousiasmé par Spider-Man : Across the Spider-Verse que par Strange World !
Pour les détails, on a d'abord visionné sur écran géant la bande-annonce déjà sortie, ce qui est toujours un plaisir. Ensuite l'équipe a expliqué que, si le premier opus était déjà très innovant visuellement, celui-ci repousse encore plus de limites. Appuyés par des démos visuelles, ils ont montré que chaque "dimension" aurait un style unique en son genre, inspirés de différentes techniques. La dimension de Gwen par exemple, qu'on a pu voir pour la première fois, a un style très aquarelle (basé sur le comics d'origine apparemment) avec une gamme de couleurs entièrement dans les tons pastel et un effet "humide" qui rend tout son univers un peu flou et éthéré. C'est vraiment superbe.
On a eu une présentation approfondie de l'histoire et des nouveaux personnages. Parmi eux, il y a par exemple le père de Gwen qui a une relation compliquée avec sa fille ; mais aussi l'antagoniste super stylé couvert de taches en effet peinture, qui sont en réalité des portails spatiaux comme on peut le voir sur le concept art (ça rappelle d'ailleurs beaucoup le personnage de Voyd qui a le même pouvoir). Il peut même détacher ces portails de son corps et les lancer.
Etant très fan des héroïnes dites "badass", le personnage qui m'a particulièrement marqué est une Spider-Woman noire et... enceinte ! je crois que c'est une grande première dans un film d'animation. Par ailleurs elle possède une magnifique moto, ce qui lui donne une classe incomparable, et son ventre arrondi ne l'empêche pas de faire des stunts de l'espace haha (les héroïnes en moto c'est vraiment ma vibe coucou Elastigirl) Elle a l'air de former un duo avec Miguel, un autre Spider-Man, qui si je me trompe pas provient d'une dimension future. C'est un personnage particulièrement violent et brutal, avec des grandes griffes, et son costume à l'air d'être une combinaison entièrement digitale ce qui rend un effet vraiment dingue.
On a visionné plusieurs extraits, mais le clou du spectacle pour moi est une séquence d'action particulièrement intense (le genre ou on retient vraiment son souffle) et très immersive bien que le film n'était pas dans son aspect final. J'étais sidéré par la fluidité des mouvements. Bref, plein de d'éléments très prometteurs qui me rendent très impatient !

As the title Across The Spider-Verse would suggest, expect an epic trek through various Spider-realities. “The two that you saw in the teaser trailer were what’s called Earth-50101, which we’re calling ‘Mumbattan’ – that’s based on an Indian comic-book look – and Nueva York from Spider-Man 2099’s world,” explains producer Christopher Miller. “That’s based on Syd Mead-style illustrations of what the future might look like. There’s also Gwen’s world, which is Earth-65. And that was a watercolour-wash style that’s reminiscent of the covers of her comic books.” Miles Morales’ journey has only just begun – the Spider-Verse awaits.

The screenwriter-producers tell EW about their upcoming animated superhero spectacle, with an expanded role for Oscar Isaac — and new ones for Issa Rae and Jason Schwartzman.
Multiverses: They're very hot right now. Between Everything Everywhere All at Once, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Hollywood sure loves a trippy tale that bounces between dimensions.
But no movie does it quite like 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the innovative animated film about teenage web-slinger Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore). When the original first swung into theaters, it almost immediately became an instant classic, reenergizing the genre and winning the Oscar for Best Animated Film. It's everything a superhero movie can and should be: ambitious, colorful, heartfelt, and deeply funny.
Now, Miles and his fellow Spideys are back — and they're about to face their biggest threat yet.
The first of two planned sequels, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, is scheduled to hit theaters June 2, 2023, and anticipation has never been higher. For EW's 2023 Preview, we caught up with screenwriter-producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who teased the next chapter in Miles' adventure, one that follows a slightly older teenage hero as he juggles growing pains with the high-stakes responsibilities of "great power."
"As he's growing up, he's trying to figure out how he can go out and see the world and spread his wings and leave the nest," Miller, 47, explains. "But he also feels rooted to his home and his family. It's that push-pull of your life as a teenager, where you're like, How do I get to be my own person, but also not lose where I came from?"
Fortunately for Miles, he's not navigating that journey alone. If the first film followed a squad of different Spider-People as they traveled to Miles' universe, this one finds Miles venturing into the multiverse himself. As he swings across dimensions — each with its own unique art style — he meets countless other Spideys. (Lord and Miller don't have a final number, but between major roles and brief cameos, they estimate about 240 unique characters were designed and modeled for Across the Spider-Verse.)
A number of familiar voices are back, as Miles reunites with Spider-Gwen (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld) and Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson). He also links up with new allies, like Jessica Drew's Spider-Woman. Insecure's Issa Rae voices Jessica, a motorcycle-riding phenomenon who helps mentor Gwen. "A lot of work has gone into making that character look great," Lord, 47, adds. "If you've ever been around Issa, she's such a dynamo of talent and grace, so you just want to make the character look as cool as she is."
Oscar Isaac takes an expanded role as Miguel O'Hara, a.k.a. Spider-Man 2099, who made a brief cameo in the first film's end-credits scene. Lord and Miller say that Miguel and Miles have a lot in common, but they don't always see eye to eye — especially when it concerns the safety of the multiverse. "He's not the villain of the movie, but he's sort of an antagonist to Miles because they both think that what they're doing is the right thing," Miller teases.
As for the actual villain? Jason Schwartzman voices the Spot, a cryptic baddie with the ability to create portals between different dimensions. With his goofy, almost dalmatian-like costume, he isn't necessarily an A-list comic book villain. But Lord and Miller say the Spot's trippy powers make him "a perfect character for animation," with abilities that allow him to bend reality almost like an old Wile E. Coyote cartoon.
"I like the villains best when they reflect the journeys of the hero — sort of a dark mirror of the protagonist," Lord adds. "And I think Spot's no different. He wants to be seen as legitimate. He's a character that has a silly costume and is not always seen as the top tier of Spider-Man foes, but like all of us, he wants to be taken seriously."
Still, despite all the jaw-dropping animation and clever cameos, Lord and Miller stress that Across the Spider-Verse is Miles' story, first and foremost.
"Even with all the whizzbang parts, we're always trying to look for ways to make them scenes between characters," Lord says. "That's the thing that everybody wants, which is so surprising to me. I never expected the star of [the first] movie to be people talking together in dramatic scenes. But that's the thing that people are most interested in."
"Really, the hardest thing is making sure that you've got a story that you care about and that you're emotionally connected to," Miller adds. "Without that, you've got nothing."
On every level, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse was a dazzling piece of work – but especially when it came to those eye-popping visuals. The world of Miles Morales and his multiversal Spider-pals looked like nothing audiences had seen before, not just subtly tweaking elements of our own universe (anyone fancy a Koca-Soda?) but presenting it all with tangible comic-book textures and impressionistic flourishes, giving the film a distinct and daring identity. Now, given the success of that experimentation, things are about to explode in boundary-pushing sequel Across The Spider-Verse, which doubles down on those unique choices and ups the scope considerably.
“Our contract with the audience is to bring them something they’ve never seen before,” writer-producer Christopher Miller tells Empire in the world-exclusive new Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse issue. And they’re going all-out to make sure they deliver on that promise – creating a follow-up that spans five different universes. “The first film was about bringing characters into Miles’ dimension,” Miller explains. “This is about Miles heading off into others.”
While Into The Spider-Verse gave us brief glimpses of the worlds inhabited by Peter B. Parker, Spider-Man Noir, Peni Parker and more, the sequel will spend real time in a bunch of dizzying dimensions. “Each world is a robust place,” says Joaquim Dos Santos, who directs alongside Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson. “We’ve essentially made five films in one.” There’s Gwen’s Earth-65, with its distinctive watercolor palette; the India-inspired Mumbattan (see the exclusive image above, plus Empire’s subscriber cover); Nueva York, the home of Oscar Isaac’s Spider-Man 2099, aka Miguel O’Hara; the punky New London, inhabited by Daniel Kaluuya’s Spider-Punk; plus a secretive fifth dimension that’s being kept tightly under wraps for now. “It goes hard,” promises writer-producer Phil Lord. “The visuals will be jaw-dropping.”
That sense of escalation in the film’s ambition is echoed by Miles Morales himself, Shameik Moore. “I will say that this story tops the first one,” he teases. “If the sky was the limit last time, the sky is now the floor. We’re stepping on it and looking at Jupiter!” Sometimes, shooting for the moon just isn’t enough.

J'étais resté sur l'idée que Spider-Man appartenait toujours à Sony qui, via un accord renégocié au fil du temps, permettait à Disney/Marvel de l'utiliser dans ses films maison.
Là avec le Spiderverse on est dans des films Sony autonomes, sans interaction Disney, non ?
Spider-Man appartient à Marvel et, par ricochet, à Disney depuis 2009. Sony a l'exclusivité des droits d'exploitation du personnage pour le cinéma, et des droits d'exploitation non exclusifs pour la télévision. Tous les projets doivent quoiqu'il en soit être co-produits par Marvel Entertainment, donc Disney qui a un droit de regard sur les choix du film et touche à la fois des royalties pour l'utilisation de son personnage ainsi qu'en tant que studio coproducteur (bien que ce soit à faible échelle).
Ce film est bien sûr un film Columbia Pictures avant tout, animé en interne au sein des studios Sony Pictures Animation mais cela reste tout de même partiellement produit par Disney via Marvel.

Probablement pas grand chose, ils doivent essentiellement lire le scénario et avoir droit de regard sur l'avancée du projet à différentes étapes pour s'assurer que le film ne contrevient pas à l'image du personnage qui est le leur. Après, on n'est pas dans le secret des dieux, peut-être que Kevin Feige apporte quelques idées, c'était d'ailleurs le cas pour les films de Sam Raimi, il était très présent et son rôle était de représenter Marvel tout au long de la production.

Il y a l'information du studio entre parenthèses + un logo (sauf version mobile) qui permet d'identifier à première vue quels films sont produits par Walt Disney, Pixar, DisneyToon, Disney Television Animation, etc. Ce sujet ne contient que le logo Marvel qui fait référence à Marvel Entertainment qui coproduit le film.

Back in 1980, Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back set the gold standard for blockbuster sequels – taking all that original Star Wars goodness and adding in some real darkness, a load of new worlds and characters, and a heap of pretty gnarly emotional stuff too. It was challenging, but a good kind of challenging – more like learning how to make rocks levitate than trying to survive a sarlacc pit. It’s a bold gambit to aim for that high-water mark with a middle-of-a-trilogy sequel, but Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (developed back-to-back with upcoming threequel Beyond The Spider-Verse) is hoping to conjure some of that Empire Strikes Back magic.
“People who’ve seen Across… have told us that it feels like The Empire Strikes Back of the Spider-Verse franchise,” writer-producer Christopher Miller tells Empire in our world-exclusive Across The Spider-Verse issue. “It shows you worlds you haven’t seen, and it’s an emotional story that ends in a place where you need to see the third one. So, yeah: this is our Empire.” Buckle up, everyone.
Upping the stakes, too, will be a fresh batch of baddies. Beyond main antagonist The Spot (whose body is covered in multiversal portals), the Across The Spider-Verse trailer saw Miles Morales brawling with Oscar Isaac's hardline hero Spider-Man 2099, aka Miguel O'Hara – plus, the film will introduce a fresh take on legendary Spider-Man villain Vulture. Didn’t somebody once say something about great power and great responsibilities? “Miles thought he’d never see his friends again,” says Kemp Powers, who directs alongside Joaquim Dos Santos and Justin K. Thompson. “But in this sequel he reconnects with Gwen, and discovers she’s part of a group of Spider-People whose mission is to protect the Multiverse. From there, he ends up on this adventure to different worlds.” Adds Shameik Moore, aka Miles himself: “He’s older, a little more experienced. But he’s missing his friends. He’s growing in skill, but he wants more of a challenge.” By the sounds of it, that’s exactly what he’s going to get.
