Thousands take an early look at new Disneytown.

THOUSANDS of Metro commuters visited the new Disneytown complex at the Shanghai Disney Resort yesterday on the opening day of Line 11’s Disney Resort station.

Over 8,000 riders had traveled to the station by 5pm yesterday, according to the city’s Metro operator, visiting the resort’s shopping, dining and entertainment district, which is open to the public free of charge.

Disney staff welcomed visitors on arrival, taking photos for them and guiding them through the various unopened shops and restaurants.

Visitors could also check out the Wishing Star Park and Lake at the station’s No 1 exit, which provides the quickest access to the resort.

“I am extremely impressed by the staffers here at the resort,” a visitor, Xie Wencheng, 76, told Shanghai Daily.

“They greet every tourist warmly with big smiles.”

“Though the shops are not open yet, the environment here is comfortable and pleasant,” said another visitor, Deng Xiangping, who was was visiting with her 17-month-old son.

However, some were disappointed by the general emptiness of the business district.

“Everything was closed, and some places were still under construction,” a visitor surnamed Wu said.

“It is boring and disappointing. But my granddaughter likes the place.”

Though the shops are not open yet, visitors can buy disposable raincoats and drinks from service carts.

Features of the Disney Resort will include the Wishing Star Lake, which covers about 40 hectares — about the size of 56 football fields.

After its opening, visitors will enjoy waterfront dining and shopping, and sunset views, said the resort. At the opening of Disneyland on June 16, Disneytown will be home to 50 businesses, including the first World of Disney store in Asia.

Crowds brave drizzle to visit Disneytown as resort station opens

THOUSANDS of Metro commuters visited the Disneytown at the Shanghai Disney Resort today on the first opening day of the Line 11’s Disney Resort station.

About 3,000 passengers have traveled by the line to the station as of this noon, according to the city’s Metro operator. Many of them braved the drizzle to visit the resort’s shopping, dining and entertainment district which has been opened to the public without admission charge.

Many Disney staff welcomed the visitors at the Disneytown by guiding them and taking photos for them, though shops and restaurants are yet to open.

At opening of the Disneyland on June 16, the Disneytown will feature nearly 50 tenants including the first World of Disney store in Asia and a diverse mix of retailers – premium, affordable luxury and fast fashion options – plus restaurants.

The tenants will include well-known local and international brands including renowned restaurants Shanghai Min, Crystal Jade, and The Cheesecake Factory operated by Hong Kong Maxim’s Group.

Other high-profile brands including Food Republic, Coconut Paradise, The Dining Room, Hatsune, blue frog, Xin Wang Restaurant, BreadTalk, Toast Box, and Chow Tai Fook.

Disneytown also will feature Disney’s theatrical production of THE LION KING, presented for the first time worldwide in Mandarin, at the 1,200-seat Walt Disney Grand Theatre. This show requires a separate ticket.

Steven Spielberg

un article sur le sujet.
http://shanghaiist.com/2016/05/03/shanghai_disneyland_trashed_before_opening.php

Shanghai Disneyland Draws Crowds—and It’s Not Even Open Yet.

SHANGHAI—On her weekend off, saleswoman Liu Jiahui and a couple of friends rode the subway for two hours and then waded through thick crowds to experience China’s newest theme park: Shanghai Disneyland—some six weeks before it officially opens.

Disneyland’s periphery is drawing thousands of people daily, as anticipation builds for the park’s long awaited opening in mid-June. Some, like Ms. Liu, rode the subway to a newly opened jumbo-size station with colorful silhouettes of Mickey Mouse on its escalators. On a multilane boulevard that passes yet-inaccessible Toy Story Hotel, a Rolls Royce was among the cars stuck in a crush of Saturday traffic that included cement mixers and utility trucks. Last week, a Shanghai air carrier said it began flying a Disney-themed Airbus A330.

The visitors are locals and tourists, including 23-year-old Liu Haiyan who ranked the proximity of Disneyland as a Shanghai must-see during her three-day trip from Anhui province. The college student, with parents in tow, peeked through a gap in green tarp to glimpse the world’s largest Disney Castle. “Very good,” she said, though hesitating when asked whether she would return later as a ticketed visitor. “A little bit expensive.”

“While we are several weeks away from our official opening, we have been impressed with the enthusiasm and excitement of our first guests,” said a spokesman for the park, run by California entertainment giant Walt Disney Co. and a group of Shanghai government companies. “The volume of guests is within our expectation and confirms our confidence in the local tourism and leisure market.”

Disney appears to be bracing for high demand initially. Peak pricing around $76 will apply during the half-month grand-opening period starting June 16, before falling to $57 for regular adult admission. Also, tickets trading online suggest premium prices for entry to trial park operations beginning May 7.

Some visitors over the long holiday weekend said increasing media coverage made them curious to tour the newly accessible and free “Disney Small Town,” as the resort’s Disneytown commercial zone translates in Mandarin. Disneytown is part of the $5.5 billion Shanghai Disney Resort, though it is technically outside the Disneyland theme park.

Families with children and elderly couples took selfies around a fountain featuring Steamboat Mickey in front of the park’s covered main gate. A hundred meters of crowd-control barriers guided a steady stream of visitors along the resort’s lakeside and over a winding red bridge toward Wishing Star Park.

Many visitors held umbrellas against the bright sun, as they strolled past Disneytown’s unopened stores, one of whom had a Lego airplane popping out of the top. The only people inside restaurants were waiters getting trained. Sightseers peeked in windows and took more selfies at the entrance to Walt Disney Grand Theater, where billboards tease coming performances of a Mandarin version of the “Lion King” musical.

Sweepers in white and blue grabbed trash as it hit the pavement. Security staff at times struggled to keep short-cutters from trampling plants. For every complaint about parking at $9.25 a day, visitors had positive comments about the clean toilets and free water. In the only business going, kiosks did brisk sales of ice pops.

The hype confused some. “Nothing up there,” said a woman after pressing for a look at a belfry decorated with mouse ears.

The spokesman said there is a broad understanding that most facilities aren’t opened yet. For many, Shanghai Disneyland has been a long wait.

“My name is Mickey,” 53-year-old Wang Jianqing said jokingly, waving a thick white glove like the one worn by Mickey Mouse. A park attendant had lent it to her. “If anyone wants to borrow the glove, I’ll let them—and a lot do,” the young man said.

As Ms. Wang and two girlfriends took photo after photo at the closed entrance to a Chinese restaurant, she said she had visited the “cute” Tokyo Disneyland once and is excited Shanghai’s park will be much larger. “I feel like I’m kind of older and I want to grab the tail of youth,” she said.

Gripping a Disneyland map and her iPhone, saleswoman Ms. Liu said she would return, despite the long subway journey. “I had wanted to take a picture with the two Mickeys,” said the 21 year old, referring to Mickey and Minnie Mouse. “I only saw the glove.”

Chinese President Xi Jinping meets Walt Disney CEO Robert Iger

Chinese President Xi Jinping met Thursday with Bob Iger, vice chair of US-China Business Council (USCBC) and chairman and chief executive officer of the Walt Disney Company.

There are extensive areas for China and the United States to cooperate, Xi said, calling on both sides to view the big picture, maintain and expand mutual interests and deepen practical cooperation.

Xi applauded the USCBC and Walt Disney Company for their efforts to boost bilateral relations with China.

China is striving to advance economic structural reform and foster a more open economy, Xi said. "China will provide convenience for foreign businesses, institutions and individuals to have exchanges and cooperation with China."

Xi said economic cooperation is an important component of China-U.S. relations and that China and the United States, with strong economic complementarity, enjoy great potential for cooperation.

"China is in favor of reaching a bilateral investment treaty through negotiations at an early date," Xi said.

Acknowledging the importance of U.S.-China cooperation, particularly in trade, Iger said the the U.S. supports an early investment treaty through negotiations, which will help businesses in both countries to expand cooperation on the basis of mutual respect and benefit.

Disney attaches great importance to promoting the culture exchanges between the U.S. and China. The Shanghai Disney Resort, which will open soon, will work to offer safe, quality and pleasant services to the Chinese visitors, Iger said.

Shanghai Disney Resort, Disney's first theme park on the Chinese mainland, is located in Shanghai's premier development zone of Pudong and is expected to open on June 16.

Disney Chairman Bob Iger Meets Chinese President Xi Jinping Ahead of Shanghai Theme Park Opening

The president is said to have applauded Disney's efforts to boost bilateral relations with China.

Disney CEO and chairman Bob Iger was welcomed by Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday for a rare official meeting in Beijing.

The tete-a-tete comes one month before Disney is set to throw open the doors on its Shanghai Disney Resort theme park, which has been over $5.5 billion and 15 years in the making.

"China and the United States share common interests," Xi told Iger, according to the state-backed news service Xinhua, which was in the room during the meeting.

"The two countries' economies are complementary and there is great potential and wide prospects for trade cooperation," Xi added, saying that China would facilitate more exchange with foreign companies and organizations

The Chinese president is also said to have applauded Walt Disney Company — and the U.S. China Business Council (USCBC), where Iger serves as vice chair — for their efforts to boost bilateral relations with China. Xi offered his congratulations to Iger on the planned opening of Shanghai Disney Resort on June 16.

Some local commentators noted that it was an unusual honor for a private business leader to be greeted by the president at the Great Hall of the People, the ceremonial seat of China's legislature.

Iger agreed to the importance of extending trade ties between the two nations, stating: "What The Walt Disney Company has been able to achieve in China, I think, is a perfect example of cooperation, but it also came after years of understanding, years of building up a deep respect for one another and appreciation for each other’s interests.”

The Disney chief has met the Chinese president before, but Thursday's gathering was understood to be their first one-on-one meeting in Beijing. During his state visit to the U.S. in September, Xi took part in a business roundtable in Seattle attended by Iger, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Warren Buffet and other elite U.S. business leaders.

Xi comments about the importance of bilateral cooperation come amid a backdrop of growing tension between China and Western media and entertainment interests. Over the past few months, Xi has given a succession of speeches to China's tech and media giants, emphasizing — or ordering — strict adherence to the Communist Party line, while also arguing for the elevation of "China's core socialist values" over Western cultural interference.

In April, China blocked the websites of the Economist and Time magazine. Apple Inc. and Dinsey are among the latest to get swept up in the crackdown on Western content. Apple's popular iMovies and iBooks services abruptly went dark there late last month, with local reports indicating that the closures were ordered by Chinese regulators. Days later, news came that DisneyLife, a China-based OTT platform set up by Alibaba to stream licensed Disney movies, cartoons, games and more, had suffered a similar closure some weeks prior. Both companies have said they hope to get the services up and running again.

Disney’s Bob Iger Meets China President Xi Jinping

Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger Thursday met with China’s powerful president Xi Jinping. The meeting took place at the ceremonial Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

It is considered rare for Xi to meet with foreign business leaders, especially in public. Iger is also vice chairman of the U.S.-China Business Council.

The meeting took place some six weeks before the opening of the Shanghai Disney Resort theme park in Shanghai.

It also took place shortly after it emerged that China had closed down DisneyLife, a streaming video service that Disney launched at the end of 2015 in a joint venture with Alibaba.

Xi is understood to have called for the deepening of cultural and commercial relations between China and the U.S.
“China will provide convenience for foreign businesses, institutions and individuals to have exchanges and cooperation with China,” official news agency Xinhua reported Xi as saying. “China is in favor of reaching a bilateral investment treaty through negotiations at an early date.”

His comments also come at a time when a growing number of foreign companies operating in China have complained about rules, regulations and business practices being loaded in favor of Chinese businesses and against foreign enterprises.

“Against the current backdrop, it’s very important for China and the US to deepen economic and trade cooperation and we support to reach China-US bilateral investment treaty through talks as early as possible, which is beneficial to enterprises and companies in both two countries,” Iger said according to a CCTV transcript. “The Walt Disney Company highly values the cultural exchange between China and the US. Shanghai Disney Resort will spare no efforts to provide safe and high-quality service for all the guests.”

In the entertainment sector, the recently introduced rules on foreign media joint ventures is one such complaint. Another area of possible contention will come from February next year when China’s rules on film imports, quotas and local distribution come up for discussion and renewal
