Une série live-action autour du célèbre Nautilus est en préparation pour Disney+ ! En 10 parties, elle racontera les origines du capitaine Nemo et de son sous-marin légendaire.


Nautilus est produite conjointement par deux sociétés britanniques, Moonriver TV et Seven Stories. La série est écrite et produite par James Dormer ("Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands"), développée et coproduite par Xavier Marchand de Moonriver TV, Anand Tucker de Seven Stories, et par Johanna Devereaux de Disney. Nautilus s'ajoute ainsi à la liste croissante de productions européennes pour Disney+, Disney ayant déclaré l'année dernière viser 50 productions commandées sur le continent d'ici 2024.

A reimagining of Jules Verne’s classic underwater adventure 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is heading to Disney+ in a new 10-part live-action series.

Unveiled on Monday, Nautilus, produced by U.K. banners Moonriver TV and Seven Stories, is set to give the famed 19th century novel a new spin, telling the origin story of Captain Nemo and his legendary submarine, The Nautilus. An Indian prince robbed of his birth right and family, a prisoner of the East India Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces which have taken everything from him, Nemo set sail with his ragtag crew on board the awe-inspiring vessel, battling foes and discovering magical underwater worlds.

It’s not the first time Disney has dipped its toe into Verne’s tale, with 1954 film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea famously starring James Mason as Nemo and Kirk Douglas as monster-harpooner Ned Land.

Developed and co-produced by Moonriver TV’s Xavier Marchand and Seven Stories’ Anand Tucker, Nautilus is written and executive produced by James Dormer (Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands) and is executive produced by Johanna Devereaux, director of scripted original content for EMEA at Disney+. Filming is set to start in early 2022.

“Jules Verne’s story is a beloved classic all around the world,” said Devereaux. “It’s a huge privilege to bring the Nautilus and her crew to life again in such a bold, exciting way, with a diverse team of creative talent and on-screen characters. The series will be breathtaking, action-packed and a huge amount of fun.”

First unveiled by Deveraux from the 2021 Edinburgh TV Festival, Nautilus adds another notch on the growing European slate for Disney+, which last year said it was targeting 50 productions commissioned from the continent by 2024. Having announced 13 titles from the U.K., France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands earlier in 2021, alongside a new unscripted series with David Beckham, the platform is already nearing a third of this target.

Alongside Nautilus, Disney used the Edinburgh TV Festival to make casting announcements on two of its previously unveiled Disney+ productions.

Nathan Stewart-Jarrett — soon to be seen in Jordan Peele’s Candyman reboot — is to take the lead in U.K. Star original Culprits, a darkly comic heist series from exec producer Stephen Garrett (The Undoing, The Night Manager) and filmmaker J Blakeson (I Care A Lot, The Disappearance of Alice Creed).

Meanwhile, Alita: Battle Angel star Rosa Salazar will lead another U.K. Star original, the romantic comedy action thriller Wedding Season. The genre-busting series about two people who shouldn’t be together, but who can’t stay away from one another, begins production later this month and will be shooting in Scotland, Manchester, London and Las Vegas.

Nautilus a trouvé sa star et son réalisateur. Shazad Latif (Star Trek: Discovery, La poursuite de l’amour) incarnera le célèbre capitaine Nemo, mystérieux prince indien qui vole un extraordinaire sous-marin à la Compagnie des Indes orientales et part à l’aventure. Michael Matthews (Love and Monsters, Five Fingers For Marseilles) réalisera cette histoire qui raconte la genèse du héros de 20 000 lieues sous les mers de Jules Verne.

EXCLUSIVE: The new Disney live-action adventure series Nautilus has found its star setting Shazad Latif to play the iconic role of Captain Nemo, the enigmatic Indian prince who steals a fantastical submarine from the East India Company and sets sail in search of adventure under the sea. Michael Matthews will direct this untold origin story inspired by Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

The ten-part epic live-action series tells the never before told origin story of Jules Verne’s most iconic character, Captain Nemo, and his legendary submarine, The Nautilus. James Dormer is on board to exec produce and write the series with Seven Stories and Moonriver TV are producing.

Production begins next month in Australia and  acknowledges the support from the Australian Government’s Location Incentive, and from the Queensland Government via Screen Queensland’s Production Attraction Strategy.

Best known as specialist Ash Tyler on Star Trek: Discovery, Latif can currently be seen on the BBC series The Pursuit Of Love. Matthews, who recently directed Love and Monsters for Paramount, already has good ties with Disney recently coming on to direct Merlin for Disney’s live-action team.

Latif is repped by ICM Partners and Matthews is repped by Range Media Partners, Management 360 and Ziffren Brittenham.

Casting is complete and filming has kicked off in Australia on Disney+’s Nautilus, the live action re-telling of Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. Joining the previously announced Shazad Latif (The Pursuit of Love) in the lead role of Captain Nemo are Georgia Flood (Anzac Girls), who plays Humility Lucas, a privileged daughter of the British Empire who is taken hostage on board the Nautilus, and Thierry Frémont (Allied) as Gustave Benoit, a French engineer and architect of the submarine. The series, which started filming this week at Village Roadshow Studios in Queensland and is produced by Xavier Marchand’s Moonriver Studios and Anand Tucker’s Seven Stories, is one of the streamer’s most high profile to be made outside of the U.S., as it targets 60 international originals over the next two years. Other new cast members include Pacharo Mzembe, Arlo Green, Tyrone Ngatai, Ling Cooper Tang, Andrew Shaw, Ashan Kumar, Céline Menville and Kayden Price. The show has also drafted in a new Production Executive, Ian Hogan, after Julie Clark moved to ITV Studios.

Cette décision s'inscrit dans le changement de stratégie de Disney concernant le streaming. Les épisodes ont été tournés et seront vendus à un autre diffuseur.

EXCLUSIVE: Nautilus, the U.K. live-action Captain Nemo series commissioned by Disney+ two years ago, is no longer headed to the streamer, Deadline has learned.

The decision is part of Disney’s streaming content removal plan unveiled in May, for which the company is taking an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion. It followed the February announcement by Disney that it intends to cut $3 billion in non-sports content spend across the company.

As part of the cost reduction strategy, Disney’s streaming platforms, particularly flagship Disney+, have been taking a closer look on their programming with a new emphasis on content curation.

As Deadline reported exclusively yesterday, Disney+ also is not going forward with another upcoming original series, the The Spiderwick Chronicles, a U.S. live-action series adaptation of the popular children’s fantasy books.

Over the past couple of months, dozens of original series and specials were taken off Disney+ as well as Hulu, and Disney CEO Bob Iger also announced a pullback in new Marvel and Star Wars shows and movies for Disney+.

Like The Spiderwick Chronicles, which is currently being shopped by lead studios Paramount Television Studios, Nautilus has been shot; it started filming in February 2022 in Australia. Disney+ is working with the production team to find a new home for Nautilus, with meetings and screenings underway.

Nautilus was announced during the 2021 Edinburgh TV Festival along with two other new original UK series for Disney+. No other U.K. local originals are understood to be impacted by the content cuts.

Disney+’s UK scripted and unscripted programming pipeline includes Culprits, from J Blakeson; Jilly Cooper’s Rivals; A Thousand Blows, from Stephen Graham; Coleen Rooney’s upcoming documentary, In Vogue, from Vogue Studios and Raw; and Shardlake, based on the novels by C. J. Sansom.

The streamer also recently greenlit two new U.K. drama series, Jeff Pope’s Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes, and thriller Playdate.

The Captain Nemo origin story series “Nautilus” lives on, with AMC Networks licensing the U.S. and Canadian linear and streaming rights to the live-action series from Disney Entertainment.

The 10-episode show was originally slated to air on Disney+, but it was announced back in August that the show was not going forward at the streamer as part of a wide-ranging cost cutting initiative at the Mouse House.

AMC and AMC+ will now air the show as a special television event in 2024, with an exact premiere date to be announced later. Inspired by Jules Vernes’ “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea,” the show will explore the early life of Captain Nemo, who is played by Shazad Latif. The character is described as “an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family, a prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces that have taken everything from him.”

“’Nautilus’ is a big, sweeping drama that is sure to appeal to fans of our Anne Rice Immortal Universe and other buzzy and fan-forward series like ‘Orphan Black: Echoes,’” said Ben Davis, executive vice president of original programming for AMC Networks and AMC Studios. “We are looking forward to bringing it to AMC+ and AMC as a special television event next year.”

Along with Latif, the cast of the show includes Georgia Flood, Thierry Fremont and Céline Menville, with guest appearances from Richard E. Grant, Anna Torv and Noah Taylor.

The series was developed and produced by Moonriver TV’s Xavier Marchand and Seven Stories’ Anand Tucker. James Dormer serves as writer and executive producer. Johanna Devereaux, Chris Loveall, Colleen Woodcock, and Daisy Gilbert also executive produce. Cameron Welsh serves as producer. Michael Matthews was the lead director.
