Citation :
Jared Leto in Early Talks With Disney for ‘Tron 3’

Disney is in early talks with Jared Leto for the actor to star in and produce a live-action “Tron 3” movie.

No writer has been hired. If the project moves forward, Justin Springer will produce with Leto and Emma Ludbrook involved in some producing capacity.

“Tron 3” has been in development as a sequel to 2010’s “Tron: Legacy,” which was directed by Joseph Kosinski and grossed $400 million worldwide, but has not yet greenlit “Tron 3.”

Variety - 3 mars 2017.

Citation :
Jared Leto Circling 'Tron' Reboot at Disney

After canceling a third installment in the sci-fi franchise in 2015, Disney is exploring the idea of a movie that would act as a Leto vehicle.

Disney is planning to get back on the grid.

The studio is in the very early stages of development for a new Tron movie, with Oscar-winning actor Jared Leto circling to star, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

No writer has been hired at this exploratory stage, and no filmmaker is involved. Justin Springer, who co-produced Tron: Legacy and executive produced the Tom Cruise sci-fi movie Oblivion, will produce. Leto and his producing partner, Emma Ludbrook, would also be involved in some producing capacity if the project moves forward.

Tron was a 1982 Disney movie set in the fantastic world inside a computer program, a cyberspace called the Grid. Starring Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner, the film wasn’t a hit at the time but was influential with its envelope-pushing special effects. It drew a cult following in the years after its release, due to its imaginative story.

In 2010, Disney revisited the world with Tron: Legacy, which starred Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde and brought back Bridges. Joseph Kosinski directed. The expensive movie made $400 million worldwide — good enough to warrant interest in a sequel.

But it’s been a series of shutdowns and restarts for a sequel, and just as it seemed it was heading toward preproduction, the studio pulled the plug for good in 2015.

But computer programs never die, it seems, they just get upgrades.

Sources say this new project is not a direct sequel and is being built out of the source code of the deleted Tron 3 script. Leto would play a character named Ares, who has not appeared onscreen before, but was a key player in that script.

At this stage, it's too early to tell if Kosinski or actors from Tron: Legacy will return.

Leto last portrayed the DC Comics villain the Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad. He will next appear with Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford in Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 and is attached to direct Paramount's crime thriller 77.

Deadline a écrit:

‘Lion’ Director Garth Davis To Direct Disney’s New ‘Tron’ Movie With Jared Leto

After taking its time figuring out where it wants the next Tron installment to go, Disney’s sci-fi franchise looks to have new life as we are hearing Garth Davis has been tapped to direct the pic starring Jared Leto.

Davis has been better known for his smaller art house films over the years like 2018’s Mary Magdalene and his critically acclaimed 2016 drama Lion, which received six Oscar nominations including for Best Picture. Tron would mark Davis’ first tentpole, and though he is not known for big-budget projects, insiders say Davis aggressively pursued the job, eventually winning over execs.

esse Wigutow wrote the most recent draft of the script. Leto is producing along with Justin Springer and Emma Ludbrook.

The original 1982 film starring Jeff Bridges was set inside the computer program called the Grid, where a computer hacker is abducted and forced to participate in gladiatorial games. The film wasn’t a hit and received mixed reviews, even though its special effects were seen as game-changing at the time. The cult following that swelled around the film in years to come as it played on cable only helped grow its popularity, to the point where Disney decided to move forward with a sequel, Tron: Legacy, in 2010, with Bridges reprising his role and Garret Hedlund and Olivia Wilde joining the franchise.

That film did go on to have box office success, bringing in $400 million globally, but even so plans for a sequel were pushed while Disney figured out how to move the story forward. The studio eventually scrapped plans for a direct sequel to Tron: Legacy, and even after Leto attached himself in 2017 and has been taking their time in figuring out next steps for this project.

Davis coming on to the project signals the next installment may finally happen, but insiders still stress a greenlight has not been given. The film is still in development but Davis’ involvement is a push in the right direction for the future of the franchise.

Variety a écrit:
New ‘Tron’ Movie Lands ‘Lion’ Helmer Garth Davis as Director

Disney’s plans for a third “Tron” movie just got big software update.

Garth Davis, who made his feature directing debut with 2016’s biographical drama “Lion,” has signed on to direct a new “Tron” movie for the studio, Variety has confirmed. The new film, however, will not be a direct sequel to 2010’s “Tron: Legacy” and 1982’s “Tron,” but chart its own path as a new installment in the franchise.

Jared Leto, who signed onto the project in 2017, is attached to star, as well as produce with Justin Springer and Emma Ludbrook. Jesse Wigutow wrote the latest version of the script, which remains in development at Disney; the project does not have a greenlight.

The original “Tron” was a box office disappointment when it opened in the summer of 1982, but its groundbreaking use of computer graphic imagery — to capture the story of a programmer (Jeff Bridges) who gets zapped inside a CPU mainframe — helped earn the film a cult following. In the 2000s, hungry for a new, lucrative franchise, Disney circled back to the property and began developing a sequel with Joseph Kosinski, then an unknown commercial director whose background in architecture design made him a strong fit for the purely virtual aesthetic baked into the “Tron” franchise.

With Kosinski, Disney took a cautious approach, having him first shoot a test reel with Bridges that was screened unannounced at the 2008 San Diego Comic-Con; the wild reception to the footage helped land the movie a greenlight. The final film — starring Bridges in a dual role, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, and Michael Sheen — opened to mixed reviews and decent box office (with a $400 million global ticket sales). The movie has itself earned a cult following, in no small part due to the score by the iconic techno-pop duo Daft Punk, and Disney began developing a sequel with Hedlund and Wilde. But the studio ultimately pulled the plug in 2015.

Two years later, Leto signed on to star in a new “Tron” movie, but until Monday, there hadn’t been much forward momentum for the franchise. Davis has more directing experience under his belt than Kosinski did when he landed “Tron: Legacy”; after “Lion,” which won him the DGA award for best first-time director, Davis made the 2018 biblical epic “Mary Magdalene” with Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix. The new “Tron” installment would be his first major studio tentpole, and his first project driven by visual effects.

Hello !

Joseph Kosinski a écrit:
I got so close. I really tried. I got close in 2015, and Disney pulled the plug on it. I hadn’t built anything, but I had the whole movie storyboarded and written. I was really excited because it was inverting the idea: It was all that stuff coming into our world, and it was about the blending of the two. But it was a different Disney by 2015. When I made Tron: Legacy, they didn’t own Marvel; they didn’t own Star Wars. We were the play for fantasy and science fiction. And once you’ve got those other things under your umbrella, it makes sense that you’re going to put your money into a known property and not the weird art student with black fingernails in the corner — that was Tron. And that’s okay. Had I made Tron: Ascension, I wouldn’t have made Only the Brave, and I wouldn’t have made the movies I made. But remember, the first Tron was not a hit when it came out. It’s a cult classic. And if Tron: Legacy’s becoming the same thing, I couldn’t be more thrilled.

Deadline Hollywood a écrit:
Disney Moving On ‘Tron: Ares’; Joachim Rønning In Talks To Helm Jared Leto In Sci-Fi Sequel: The Dish

EXCLUSIVE: A new installment of Tron is coming back online. The Dish hears that Disney is in early negotiations to set Joachim Rønning to direct Jared Leto in Tron: Ares. The film is crewing up, eyeing an August start date in Vancouver.

Deals aren’t complete yet, but this would mark the fourth collaboration between Disney and the Norwegian filmmaker who helmed Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. He has wrapped for the studio the Daisy Ridley-starrer Young Woman and the Sea, about the daring journey of Gertrude Ederle, a New York teen who became the first woman to swim across the English Channel. Jeff Nathanson scripted it, and Jerry Bruckheimer produces with him.

Now it’s on to the Disney sci-fi franchise, which began with the 1982 film that starred Jeff Bridges and was set inside the computer program called the Grid, where a computer hacker is abducted and forced to participate in gladiatorial games. The first one wasn’t more than a cult favorite, though its special effects were seen as game-changing at the time. That following swelled around the film in years to come as it played on cable only helped grow its popularity, to the point where Disney decided to move forward with a sequel, Tron: Legacy, in 2010, with Bridges reprising his role and Garret Hedlund and Olivia Wilde joining the franchise. That film grossed $400 million globally, and Disney has been trying to figure out how to continue the franchise since.

The studio got close in 2017 with Leto. Now it will be in the hands of Rønning, who early on broke into Hollywood co-directing with Espen Sandberg Kon-Tiki, the 2013 film that was nominated for the Best Foreign-Language Film Oscar and chronicled Thor Heyerdah’s epic 4,300-mile crossing of the Pacific Ocean on a balsawood raft in 1947. Young Woman and the Sea isn’t slotted yet, but it has been testing strongly.

The Tron: Ares script is by Jesse Wigutow and is considered the sequel to Tron: Legacy, which was directed by Top Gun: Maverick‘s Joe Kosinski.

Sean Bailey and Sam Dickerman are the execs.

The producers are Justin Springer (Tron: Legacy), Leto, Jeffrey Silver and Leto’s Paradox partner Emma Ludbrook.

Leto, who next will co-star in Disney’s Haunted Mansion, is repped by WME and attorney Barry Hirsch; Ronning is UTA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and attorney Warren Dern.

Evan Peters rejoint l'équipe.

The Hollywood Reporter a écrit:

Joachim Rønning, who helmed 'Maleficent: Mistress of Evil' and co-directed 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,' is directing the sci-fi adventure.

Welcome to the Grid, Evan Peters.

The actor, who generated acclaim for his portrayal of the title character in Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, has closed a deal to star opposite Jared Leto in Tron: Ares, the third installment of Disney’s technology-pushing movie series.

Joachim Rønning is directing the feature that is due to begin shooting August in Vancouver. Getting filming off the ground would be a coup for the studio, which has been trying to make a Tron 3 for over a decade and turn Tron into a bonafide brand and franchise.

Disney released the original Tron in 1982, with Jeff Bridges starring as video game designer Kevin Flynn, who is transported inside his own creation and teams up with Tron, a security program played by Bruce Boxleitner. The film was not considered a box office success but did earn two Oscar nominations. Ironically, none were for visual effects, which is one of the aspects the movie became known for as it went on to become a cult hit.

The studio finally made a sequel in 2010, Tron: Legacy, that was directed by future Top Gun: Maverick filmmaker Joseph Kosinski. That one starred Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde and brought back Bridges. That movie, too, didn’t exactly light up the box office like the studio hoped for, although it once again pushed visual effects as well as de-aging technology.

A sequel to Legacy had been in the works on-and-off, with the Legacy characters earmarked to return. Eventually, that was scrapped and a new direction was set forth.

While the two previous movies were largely set inside the world of computers and programs, the script for Ares, written by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne, is said to focus on the emergence of a sentient program that crosses over into the human world that is not ready for contact.

Leto, who has been attached to the project for several years, is to play Ares, the manifestation of the program.

It is unclear who Peters would play although the script calls for a soldier in the computer world and an awkward gamer in the human world.

Emma Ludbrook, Jeffrey Springer and Leto are producing. Russell Allen is executive producing.

Peters came to many moviegoers’ attention thanks to a memorable part in Bryan Singer’s well-regarded X-Men: Days of Future Past where he played Peter Maximoff, aka the speedy hero known as Quicksilver, which he reprised in the not so-well regarded X-Men: Apocalypse and X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

It’s in his TV work that he has shown his chops, however, whether it’s being part of the Ryan Murphy repertoire in multiple seasons of horror anthology American Horror Story or appearing in HBO’s Mare of Easttown, the latter winning him an Emmy in the outstanding supporting actor in a limited or anthology series or movie category.

He earned high marks for his portrayal of serial killer and cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer in the Murphy-produced true crime series and is expected to be a major player in the Emmy race now underway. Monster became Netflix’s second highest most-watched series of all time when it was released last fall and Peters won a Golden Globe for best actor in miniseries or television film.

Peters is repped by CAA and Johnson Shapiro.

Variety a écrit:

“Tron 3” director Joachim Rønning took to Instagram to reveal that production on the Disney-backed sequel was supposed to start this week but has been shut down amid the WAG and SAG-AFTRA strikes. As a result, more than 150 crew members have been laid off from the movie, he revealed. The film, which is officially titled “Tron: Ares,” is set to star Jared Leto, Evan Peters, Greta Lee and Jodie Turner-Smith.

Variety has reached out to Disney for comment.

“Today was supposed to be our first day of principal photography on ‘Tron: Ares’ (a movie subsequently about AI and what it means, and takes, to be human),” Rønning wrote. “Instead, we are shut down with over a hundred and fifty people laid off. It’s indefinite, which makes it exponentially harder for everyone.”

“The AMPTP, SAG-AFTRA and WGA need to speed up the negotiating process and not leave the table until it’s done,” he continued. “This is Hollywood. We close deals for breakfast. Why do we suddenly have all the time in the world when every day is so precious? These tactics are extremely frustrating. It’s time for diplomacy so we can get back to work — under conditions that are fair to everybody.”

Leto is starring in “Tron: Ares” as Ares, the manifestation of a program that becomes sentient and crosses over into the human world, with “Past Lives” star Lee as a video game programmer and tech company CEO who aims to protect her world-changing technology. Additional plot details are being kept under wraps.

The first “Tron” movie, starring Jeff Bridges, debuted in 1982 and flopped at the box office despite its groundbreaking innovations in digital visual effects. Over time, “Tron” developed a cult following, leading to the 2010 sequel “Tron: Legacy,” starring Bridges, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde and helmed by Joseph Kosinski (“Top Gun: Maverick”).

Collider a écrit:

Following a suspension in preproduction three months ago, as a result of the SAG-AFTRA strike, Collider has learned that shooting on Tron: Ares is set to begin in Vancouver, BC, right after the holidays. The upcoming movie is set to feature Jared Leto in the main role, but specific details about his character haven't been revealed yet. Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Cameron Monaghan are also part of the cast assembled by director Joachim Rønning.

Monaghan might be portraying a "virtual" character in the film's digital world, given his experience with motion capture in the Star Wars: Jedi video game series. It's uncertain whether Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, and Olivia Wilde will return to their roles from earlier films in the series. The news of the movie's production commencing is a welcome one, following Rønning's comments in August, when he revealed that over 150 employees had been let go from the project. At the time, as well as addressing the reasons for the strike, Rønning revealed details of the film's plot, which seemed remarkably prescient given the current fears about AI in the industry, saying:

"Today was supposed to be our first day of principal photography on TRON: ARES (a movie subsequently about AI and what it means, and takes, to be human). Instead, we are shut down with over a hundred and fifty people laid off. It’s indefinite, which makes it exponentially harder for everyone."

What are the 'Tron' Movies About?

Tron followed Jeff Bridges' Kevin Flynn, a computer programmer who became digitized and part of the electronic world within a computer. Programs resemble other humans and are tied to the rules of their digital environment. Its sequel, Tron: Legacy, sees Kevin's son Sam (Garrett Hedlund) head into the Grid to find Kevin, who has been missing for almost thirty years. He finds a far more advanced society than that of the first film, discovering a cloned program of his father that seeks to escape the Grid and take over Sam's world.

The movies—particularly the original—were known for their stunning and groundbreaking visual effects, with the former becoming one of the first movies to rely extensively on computer-generated imagery (CGI). Both Tron and Tron: Legacy can be streamed on Disney+, alongside the superb animated series, Tron: Uprising, which takes place between the events of the first two films. A release date for Tron: Ares is yet to be announced.
