Citation :
At the same time, the other new thrill ride using the ride system once planned for a Tron-themed Lightcycle coaster on the PeopleMover track is also finishing up design work. It’s no longer “if” on these two new E Ticket attractions, it’s “when”.

[Disneyland Park] Tomorrowland - Page 6 Pic34
Light Cycles speeding above Tomorrowland? Thoughts?

The Tomorrowland project is the most problematic, as reworking the old PeopleMover route and its loading station in the center of the land will require several years of ugly construction. The similarity between Tomorrowland in its current state and DCA of five years ago is quite apt, since DCA had several popular attractions that were located in a lackluster environment that weren’t aesthetically pleasing or particularly inviting. Space Mountain and Star Tours are two of the most popular thrill rides in Anaheim, while Buzz Lightyear, Autopia and the Submarines offer solid attractions that offer important capacity to children or those looking for non-thrill excitement. But Tomorrowland’s aesthetic appearance is disjointed and aging poorly, and it comes up repeatedly in visitor surveys as a place that people don’t particularly enjoy.
Disneyland’s Tomorrowland is tired and worn out, and WDI and TDA acknowledge that. The goal of the Tomorrowland redo isn’t just to add a ride back to the PeopleMover track and move the Rocket Jets back up to their rightful place above the loading station, the project is also designed to reskin the existing Tomorrowland structures and create a cohesive and relevant “futuristic” environment for the 21st century.
[...]
Preliminary work on Tomorrowland could begin before the 60th Anniversary is over, but the bulk of that construction wouldn’t begin until 2016 while the Monstropolis project finishes up and debuts.

A GREAT BIG BEAUTIFUL TOMORROW

With so many headliner additions slated for the parks in the next few years, you would think that would make next month’s D23 Expo a home-run of exciting announcements and lavish Imagineering artwork of the upcoming rides. But it appears the exact opposite will be true, as WDI has been warned by Burbank to keep their cards very close to their vest at D23 Expo while Comcast pours money into several new rides at Universal Studios up the freeway in Hollywood. And until the Board officially approves the big expenditures for Fiscal Year 2014 through ’17, it doesn’t look like the beans can be spilled in time for D23 Expo. That’s not to say that smaller scale projects can’t get underway sooner, particularly in Tomorrowland, as part of a strategic plan is to remake that aging section and restore its former glory. The plan now, using development funds under the 100 Million dollar mark already earmarked for Disneyland, is to go in and do “placemaking” and aesthetic improvements in Tomorrowland just prior to the 60th Anniversary in 2015. Captain EO is on the chopping block with that plan, which should come as no surprise to anyone. The long-rumored West Coast version of the Monsters Inc. Laugh Factory would take up residence in that 3-D theater, while the area around it gets an aesthetic re-skinning that will help it mesh better with the big-budget plan to bring more Star Wars presence to Tomorrowland. The E Ticket of the Tomorrowland remake uses the speeder bike coaster concept on the old PeopleMover route, originally Imagineered with a Tron theme but now using Star Wars as the storyline for the new ride.

Very Happy

Citation :
LOS ANGELES — Walt Disney Co., known for teasing fans with clues to new attractions, used its convention in Anaheim, Calif., to hint that ‘‘Star Wars’’ would play a role in a new round of theme-park improvements.

Disney placed crates with ‘‘Star Wars’’ references in an area of the D23 Expo highlighting new attractions. One was labeled ‘‘lightsaber assortment.’’ Another sported a cutout of R2-D2, giving the appearance the robot character had escaped from the box. The three-day gathering for Disney fans ended Sunday.
The hints followed comments by chairman and CEO Robert Iger, who said on a conference call Tuesday that the Burbank, Calif.-based company plans to announce new attractions in Disneyland, the original park in Anaheim opened by the founder of Walt Disney in 1955. Disney acquired ‘‘Star Wars’’ maker Lucasfilm last year for $4.1 billion.
‘‘We’re going to continue to invest in Disneyland,’’ Iger said. ‘‘We’ve got some pretty exciting things that we’ll be announcing over the next couple of months.’’
The crates were addressed to Disney’s Imagineering theme park design group and stamped ‘‘speculation beyond imagination’’ and ‘‘Project Orange Harvest,’’ with some of it in lettering similar to the ‘‘Star Wars’’ logo.

Disney has said it wants to use characters like the robot C-3PO and Chewbacca the Wookiee in parks, movies, and television programming. The world’s largest entertainment company will release its first ‘‘Star Wars’’ film, the seventh in the series, in 2015.
Since the Lucasfilm acquisition, Disney-oriented websites have speculated about the location of a ‘‘Stars Wars’’ attraction. Themeparkinsider.com reported in June that the company was planning a ‘‘Star Wars’’ land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios park in Orlando.

Disney earned 19 percent of its almost $10 billion in operating income from the parks division last year.
Thomas Staggs, the chairman of Disney’s parks and resorts division, declined to comment on new Disneyland attractions or the possibility of a standalone ‘‘Star Wars’’ park, when asked at the convention.

David Koenig, who has written four books about Disney, said the company may be considering remodeling the Tomorrowland section of Disneyland with a ‘‘Star Wars’’ theme or building a new park on land it owns nearby.

‘‘They like to cluster them,’’ Koenig said of the company’s theme parks.
Todd Regan, founder of the website MiceChat.com, said on a recent podcast that the plans may include a ‘‘Star Wars’’ cantina in Florida.

Disney owns 461 acres in Anaheim and has a long-term lease for an additional 49 acres, according to its annual report. The company operates two theme parks there, the original Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.

The company already operates Star Tours, a space travel thrill ride that was done in collaboration with ‘‘Star Wars’’ creator George Lucas.

Disney stock fell 1.6 percent to $64.73 on Friday in New York. The shares have risen 30 percent this year.
