1. Life As We Know It - $15M
2. The Social Network - $15M
3. Secretariat - $14.5M

The Hollywood Reporter annonce 12.6 millions de dollars.

Racing saga "Secretariat" stirred the emotions of moviegoers during the weekend -- just not enough of them. The latest in a series of disappointing film releases by Disney, "Secretariat" represents only the second major theatrical campaign by the recently assembled marketing team of Hollywood newbie MT Carney. She was among those accepting blame for the poor summer outing of Disney's family fantasy "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and on Sunday she acknowledged "Secretariat" was playing well only in the U.S. heartland.

"We always knew it was going to play better in the center of the country than elsewhere," Carney told The Hollywood Reporter. "We did hugely well in the smaller towns and didn't do so well in New York and L.A. But we knew that would be the case."

Supplementing other marketing efforts, Disney promoted the PG-rated picture heavily to faith-based organizations in a campaign reminiscent of last year's sports drama "The Blind Side" from Warner Bros. Carney declined to comment on costs related to more traditional media buys for the movie, but she signaled a continuing evolution of her strategies for the Disney film slate.

A onetime consumer-products marketer, Carney said she is reviewing the studio's marketing approach with an eye toward possible changes.

"One of the big things that we're doing is to look at what's working for us and what's not working," she said. "I have radically changed the marketing team, and we're going to be looking at the media mix and seeing where we should be spending our money."

That doesn't necessarily mean the studio will adopt more unconventional methods in its theatrical marketing, she cautioned.

"We have to look at what's making an impact and actually driving people to see the movie -- as opposed to what just gets people talking," Carney said. "Sometimes there is a temptation just to go for the shiny new thing. So if we should be doing more television, then that's what we will do. If it means more social-networking media, then that's what we will do."

Carney's team has yet to work on a picture they helped to green-light. But that doesn't make challenges such as "Secretariat" any less important, the Scottish-born marketing maven stressed.

"I feel responsible for everything I do, and I take all of this incredibly seriously and personally," she said. "That's something I just have to get over. But when I get to the movies that we helped to green-light, that will help drive the process."

In the show position, Secretariat clocked in with an estimated $12.6 million on around 3,600 screens at 3,072 locations. While far from the champion that the titular horse was, the movie's opening was stronger than recent October horse movies Flicka and Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story. Secretariat, though, trailed its most comparable picture, Seabiscuit, by a wide margin. Playing at two thirds of the theaters, Seabiscuit made $20.9 million out of the gate, or the equivalent of over $27 million adjusted for ticket price inflation (though it had more hype and a best-selling book behind it). Distributor Walt Disney Pictures reported that Secretariat played stronger than normal for its gross in the middle of the country (especially in Kentucky, of course). The studio's research showed that 58 percent of the audience was aged 35 years and older, that 55 percent of the audience was female, and that 67 percent was "couples" (followed by "families" at 27 percent).

Rarely have I seen so much snark as there's been this weekend now that Secretariat came up lame at the box office despite its "A" Cinemascore and PG advantage. But Friday night it hit a West Coast wall, leaving only Saturday for Disney to hope to capture some of the family crowds and see hidden strength in the Heartland. It did overperform in Salt Lake City, Denver, Phoenix, Dallas, Seattle. Attendance skewed older (ages 35+ at 58%) and slightly female (55%). Couples comprised the majority at 67% with families second at 27%. Still the pic underperformed despite last Saturday's sneak previews around the nation as well as an aggressive 6-week screening program with approximately 250 screenings in the Top 50 markets. (Locations included large churches and military bases.) Disney is known for producing “movies that inspire” (Remember The Titans, Miracle, Invincible, The Rookie) especially with a sports focus. But the majority of those films have opened in the $16M-19M range. Problem is, Disney thought Secretariat could perform like The Blind Side and it didn't. Good thing the production cost was only low-$30sM.

All weekend, rival studio execs snarked to me about how the Secretariat marketing campaign was "horrid," in the words of one. "The only audience interested was old females, but the print and the spots made it look like an action movie. Where was The Blind Side's spunky female empowerment, the comedy, the romance?" Criticized another, "I think when you take the beautiful Diane Lane and turn her into a frumpy aged-up woman, you're flirting with danger. Then there's the whole horse thing, which is probably second only to boxing in moviegoing 'who cares?'. Plus, Seabiscuit opened in summer when there was a dearth of adult pictures and it really stood out. This one is awash in a sea of adult movies." Seabiscuit from Universal opened with $20.8M over the weekend of July 25, 2003, and was considered an underperformer. "I know Seabiscuit worked," a rival exec tells me, "but Seabiscuit was based on a bestselling book with a real underdog story about an underdog horse. The tables are switched with this story because the horse was dominant but the owner was the underdog. Big difference."

As for Disney marketing, it's a weak start for the Rich Ross regime which inherited this movie from predecessor Dick Cook. No one's impressed yet with Ross' new marketing czarina MT Carney (who comes across as Ross' Yes Woman, I hear). And it's nothing short of bizarre that the studio brought in the despised Valerie Van Galder to help on the Pirates Of The Caribbean 4 campaign.

ça n'a absolument rien à voir.
